{"id":319459,"date":"2023-04-21T08:05:22","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T07:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=319459"},"modified":"2023-04-21T08:16:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T07:16:39","slug":"crypto-developers-expose-absolutely-horrible-flaws-in-societe-generale-euro-stablecoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-developers-expose-absolutely-horrible-flaws-in-societe-generale-euro-stablecoin\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto developers expose &#8216;absolutely horrible&#8217; flaws in Societe Generale euro stablecoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several crypto developers have found flaws in the smart contract code of Societe Generale's (SG) euro stablecoin, EURCV.<\/p>\n<p>On April 20, SG <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/societe-generales-crypto-arm-to-launch-euro-pegged-stablecoin\/\">said<\/a> the EURCV would be limited to investors onboarded by Societe Generale group through its existing compliance procedures.<\/p>\n<h2>Developers highlight flaws<\/h2>\n<p>Software engineer Cygaar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xCygaar\/status\/1649108182957178882?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">discovered<\/span><\/a> that the bank could take and burn all of its users' money through certain functions in its smart contract.<\/p>\n<p>Cygaar added that &#8220;SG was much better off using <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bnp-paribas-joins-j-p-morgans-blockchain-to-trade-tokenized-bonds\/\">Onyx<\/a> (JPM's internal system) or some internal db since they're looking for a centralized settlement layer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another developer, 0xfoobar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xfoobar\/status\/1649056938062118913?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">noted<\/span><\/a> that the code requires every single ERC20 transfer to first be approved by the centralized registrar in a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a> transaction before it can be processed.<\/p>\n<p>Pseudonymous smart contract engineer alephv.eth also highlighted this issue. The engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alpeh_v\/status\/1649051699565449217?s=20\">added<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They coded it so they have to whitelist all users, process all user transfers, and even process your ERC20 approvals before they process your &#8216;transferFrom' lmao.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This will significantly slow down the transaction speed for the stablecoin and complicate the whole process.<\/p>\n<p>Origin Protocol developer Scott Mitchell <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottybmitch\/status\/1649062449025253379?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">added<\/span><\/a> that this could not work on Ethereum from an economic perspective. Mitchell said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Even if they batch validate transactions and wait for low gas it still will cost too much at scale.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A blockend engineer with Cyfrin Audits Patrick Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatrickAlphaC\/status\/1649196914087165952?s=20\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The worst part: they didn\u2019t use custom errors.
