{"id":318796,"date":"2023-04-19T11:00:24","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T10:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=318796"},"modified":"2026-04-25T18:41:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T17:41:19","slug":"metamask-refutes-alleged-wallet-exploit-claims-not-a-metamask-specific-exploit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/metamask-refutes-alleged-wallet-exploit-claims-not-a-metamask-specific-exploit\/","title":{"rendered":"MetaMask refutes wallet exploit claims \u2013 &#8216;not a MetaMask-specific exploit&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MetaMask, a leading Web3 wallet provider, is currently embroiled in a dispute over claims that its wallet was exploited in a massive &#8220;wallet-draining operation&#8221; \u2014 resulting in the disappearance of over 5,000 Ethereum (<a href=\"\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-veterans-targeted-in-mysterious-metamask-heists-5k-eth-stolen\/\">reported<\/a> by <em>CryptoSlate<\/em> on April 18, these allegations surfaced after Taylor <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monahan \u2014 a MetaMask developer and founder of MyCrypto \u2014 took to Twitter to report the loss of $10.5 million in crypto and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) since December 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, MetaMask has strongly denied the claims through a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetaMask\/status\/1648422118097584128\">tweets<\/a> \u2014 stating that their platform has not been exploited in any way.<\/p>\n<p>MetaMask tweeted :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Recent reporting on [Monahan's] thread has incorrectly claimed that a massive wallet draining operation is as a result of a MetaMask exploit. This is incorrect. This is not a MetaMask-specific exploit.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to MetaMask, the funds were siphoned from different addresses across 11 blockchains and denied that their wallet was compromised in any way.<\/p>\n<h2>MetaMask investigating the source of exploit alongside other Web3 players<\/h2>\n<p>In a series of tweets, the wallet provider confirmed that they were collaborating with others in the Web3 space to identify the root cause of the exploit.<\/p>\n<p>According to Monahan, it is unclear how the exploit was carried out but she speculated the attacker may have obtained a large amount of old data that was used to exploit the funds.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, she claimed that the attacker was targeting long-time MetaMask users and employees by exploiting a vulnerability in the MetaMask platform. However, Monahan later clarified that the exploit is not specific to MetaMask and that users of all wallets \u2014 including those created on a hardware wallet \u2014 had been affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cryptocurrency industry is no stranger to hacks, rug-pulls, and exploits of various kinds. Unfortunately, 2023 has been a particularly difficult year for several DeFi protocols, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/euler-finance-eul-crashes-48-following-197m-hack\/\">Euler Finance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ronin-bridge-hackers-used-chipmixer-to-launder-over-73m-of-stolen-funds\/\">Ronin Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nomad-bridge-drained-of-190m-after-hundreds-of-addresses-copy-hackers-code\/\">Nomad Bridge<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/breakdown-how-the-hacker-stole-80k-eth-from-the-solana-wormhole-bridge\/\">Wormhole Bridge<\/a>.
