{"id":318385,"date":"2023-04-18T11:30:41","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T10:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=318385"},"modified":"2023-07-16T12:21:39","modified_gmt":"2023-07-16T11:21:39","slug":"gary-genslers-old-pro-algorand-video-ignites-debate-amid-unregistered-security-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/gary-genslers-old-pro-algorand-video-ignites-debate-amid-unregistered-security-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Gary Gensler&#8217;s old pro-Algorand video ignites debate amid unregistered security claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) came under fire after declaring Algorand (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cryptoslate.com\/coins\/algorand\">ALGO<\/a>) unregistered security \u2014 despite SEC Chair Gary Gensler \u201cshilling\u201d the cryptocurrency in a video from four years ago that has resurfaced on Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2D3SbYzzJLc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gensler praised Algorand as a &#8220;great technology&#8221; and considered the possibility of integrating an Uber or Lyft-like application on its platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in the SEC's April 17 lawsuit against cryptocurrency trading platform Bittrex, Algorand was one of six tokens accused of being an unregistered security.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Crypto Twitter accuses SEC of contradictory actions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversy has led to accusations of hypocrisy from members of the cryptocurrency community, with some pointing out the apparent inconsistency in the SEC's\u00a0 <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-file-charges-against-bittrex-former-ceo-for-operating-without-license\/\">actions<\/a> <\/strong>towards Algorand and Bittrex<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algorand was created by a personal friend of the SEC's former director of corporate finance, William Hinman \u2014 which has further fueled speculation about the motives behind the SEC's recent actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mason Versluis, a cryptocurrency researcher, was among the first to bring the video to attention on April 17 with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MasonVersluis\/status\/1647987623670218752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>tweet<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accusing Gensler of promoting ALGO \u2014 while others in the crypto community have called out the SEC chair for what they see as contradictory actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the &#8220;Fintech Beyond Crisis&#8221; conference on April 25, 2019, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/congressman-advances-legislation-to-fire-gary-gensler-downgrade-position\/\">Gary Gensler<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expressed his admiration for Algorand when addressing the audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The video has led Adam Cochran, a partner at Cinneamhain Ventures, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamscochran\/status\/1648076710691086337\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>raise<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doubts about the effectiveness of Gensler's advice for crypto companies to register with the SEC. Cochran's comments highlight the apparent inconsistency between Gensler's previous praise for Algorand's technology and the recent declaration by the SEC that ALGO is an unregistered security. He tweeted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now I can't help but be astonished that Gary thinks &#8220;come in and register because we have clear rules&#8221; can apply here?
