The blacklisted address exploited a bug in the MEV-boost relay to back-run the bot's transactions and stole 3 million USDT and $22 million in ERC-20 tokens.<\/p>\n<p>With the blacklisting, Tether has now <a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/tx\/0xb4558ac451506502f32f54d144a07027c0bb6c3f7bc60e6edc6115c4781e8153\">frozen<\/a> the 3 million USDT from the exploit.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto stakeholders criticize Tether<\/h2>\n<p>Polygon co-founder Jaynti Kanani <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdkanani\/status\/1645646339521355776?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">described<\/span><\/a> the incident as a &#8220;bad precedent,&#8221; while on-chain sleuth ZachXBT called it &#8220;disappointing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fastlane co-founder Thogard said this was the &#8220;most concerning DeFi development of 2023.&#8221; Thogard <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThogardPvP\/status\/1645598593758416897?s=20\">added<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The bot &#8216;victims' signed those transactions and sent them to the relay. They were executed. The exploit wasnt in DeFi. Tether's block implies they have an opinion on eth's consensus \/ social layer.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, community members have speculated on why Tether blocked the address. On-chain investigator ZachXBT <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zachxbt\/status\/1645494423399145500?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">believes<\/span><\/a> Tether likely got a court order to blacklist the wallet, while others said it was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0x_Imperius\/status\/1645502673079205900?s=20\"><span class=\"s4\">evidence<\/span><\/a> that influential people were behind the MEV bots.<\/p>\n<p>In an e-mailed response to <em>CryptoSlate<\/em>, a Tether spokesperson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tether routinely works with law enforcement agencies around the world as part of our commitment to cooperation, transparency, and accountability. We respect official requests to temporarily freeze funds and are proud of our role as industry leaders in promoting cooperation between industry and government authorities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MEV bots are automated high-frequency traders that rely on the speed and complexity of the blockchain to capture arbitrage opportunities.
