{"id":311022,"date":"2023-03-21T13:30:30","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T13:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=311022"},"modified":"2023-03-21T15:48:35","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T15:48:35","slug":"sony-interactive-entertainment-files-for-nft-patent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sony-interactive-entertainment-files-for-nft-patent\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony Interactive Entertainment files for NFT patent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"group w-full text-gray-800 dark:text-gray-100 border-b border-black\/10 dark:border-gray-900\/50 bg-gray-50 dark:bg-[#444654]\">\n<div class=\"text-base gap-4 md:gap-6 md:max-w-2xl lg:max-w-2xl xl:max-w-3xl p-4 md:py-6 flex lg:px-0 m-auto\">\n<div class=\"relative flex w-[calc(100%-50px)] flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3 lg:w-[calc(100%-115px)]\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col gap-3\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] flex flex-col items-start gap-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert dark\">\n<p>Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/patentscope.wipo.int\/search\/en\/detail.jsf?docId=WO2023039557&_cid=P12-LFCQE7-38867-1\">patent<\/a> application to enhance the NFT framework within its video games and consoles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex justify-between\">\n<div class=\"text-gray-400 flex self-end lg:self-center justify-center mt-2 gap-3 md:gap-4 lg:gap-1 lg:absolute lg:top-0 lg:translate-x-full lg:right-0 lg:mt-0 lg:pl-2 visible\">\n<p>Despite the popularity of NFTs waning since the boom of 2021, Sony \u2014 one of the gaming industry's most prominent players with a current <a href=\"https:\/\/ycharts.com\/companies\/SONY\/market_cap\">market capitalization<\/a> of $109.1 billion \u2014 has so far remained cautious on whether to enter into the NFT space.<\/p>\n<h2>NFT framework for transferring digital assets between devices<\/h2>\n<p>The company\u2019s newly-published patent \u2014 published by Sony Japan \u2014 examines the potential of how interoperability can flow between different games within its ecosystem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Current systems are technologically inadequate for the owner to use the asset across different games and platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly, as further recognized herein, the functionality of the game may be enhanced by enabling gamers and\/or spectators to exclusively use the asset and possibly transfer its rights to others via NFT.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though the technology is not currently deployed, Sony appears keen to explore how NFT technology can be used within its wider gaming ecosystem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Components included in one embodiment can be used in other embodiments in any appropriate combination. For example, any of the various components described herein and\/or depicted in the Figures may be combined, interchanged, or excluded from other embodiments.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The patent also expressly outlines how these NFTs would be valid across all hardware \u2014 from virtual reality headsets, to tablets, computers, mobile phones and consoles.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The digital asset is then usable via the NFT by the first end-user entity across plural different computer simulations and\/or across plural different computer simulation platforms.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The patent also discusses the possibility of minting progress in a particular video game, such as a certain level, score, or points accumulation, and then transferring or selling it via NFT \u2014 allowing players to advance their gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>All of this signals a likely push towards a more favorable Web-3 business model for one of the world's largest gaming corporations.<\/p>\n<h2>Sony's Web3 push<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group w-full text-gray-800 dark:text-gray-100 border-b border-black\/10 dark:border-gray-900\/50 bg-gray-50 dark:bg-[#444654]\">\n<div class=\"text-base gap-4 md:gap-6 md:max-w-2xl lg:max-w-2xl xl:max-w-3xl p-4 md:py-6 flex lg:px-0 m-auto\">\n<div class=\"relative flex w-[calc(100%-50px)] flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3 lg:w-[calc(100%-115px)]\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col gap-3\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] flex flex-col items-start gap-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert dark\">\n<p>Despite Sony's latest patent, gamers seeking to utilize NFTs for enhancing their gameplay and gaining a more personalized experience will have to exercise patience.
