{"id":296288,"date":"2023-02-07T10:00:13","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T10:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=296288"},"modified":"2023-02-07T09:58:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T09:58:32","slug":"bitvavo-expected-to-receive-at-least-80-of-dcgs-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitvavo-expected-to-receive-at-least-80-of-dcgs-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitvavo expected to receive at least 80% of DCG&#8217;s debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitvavo\/\">Bitvavo<\/a> is expecting Digital Currency Group (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/digital-currency-group\/\">DCG<\/a>) to repay at least 80% of its debt to the exchange, according to a Reuters report.<\/p>\n<p>DCG owes \u20ac280 million to Bitvavo \u2014 which equates to over $300 million \u2014 as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/currencies\/crypto-exchange-bitvavo-eyes-80-100-recovery-dcg-deal-company-2023-02-07\/\">stated<\/a> in the Reuters article. Bitvavo said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The result submitted to the court amounts to an expected recovery rate of between 80-100% which will be repaid in cash, digital assets, cash and convertible preferred equity notes in DCG.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The exchange expects the agreement to be finalized in the coming weeks as soon as the details are worked out.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 10, the exchange rejected DCG's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitvavo-rejects-dcgs-70-repayment-proposal\/\">proposal<\/a> to pay 70% of its debt to Bitvavo. Bitvavo argued that the DCG had sufficient funds to make full payment.<\/p>\n<h2>DCG settles with Genesis and Gemini<\/h2>\n<p>Bitvavo's above statement followed an in-principle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/genesis-parent-dcg-reach-initial-deal-with-main-creditors-coindesk-2023-02-06\/\">agreement<\/a> between DCG, its lender <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/genesis\/\">Genesis<\/a>, and crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/gemini\/\">Gemini<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis will either sell the company or turn over its equity to creditors to cover its debt, according to the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Gemini will contribute $100 million to help provide liquidity to Gemini Earn users.<\/p>\n<p>DCG <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/dcg-sells-22m-worth-of-grayscale-shares-to-raise-funds\/\">sold<\/a> Grayscale shares at $8 per share on Feb. 7, raising around $22 million.<\/p>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<p>The sides have been in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/silberts-dcg-is-being-investigated-by-doj-and-sec-over-internal-transactions\/\">quarrel<\/a> since November 2022. Genesis took a heavy impact from the Terra-Luna crash in May 2022 and ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/genesis-crypto-lending-unit-halts-customer-withdrawals\/\">halting<\/a> withdrawals on Nov. 16. Two months later; the lender <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/genesis-sacks-30-of-workers\/\">laid off<\/a> 30% of its staff, which raised concerns regarding the company's insolvency.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis was one of the partners of Gemini's Earn Program, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/digital-currency-group-gets-jan-8-deadline-to-resolve-gemini-earn-issues\/\">started<\/a> having liquidity troubles in late December after Genesis halted withdrawals. Gemini founders <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/cameron-winklevoss\/\">Cameron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/tyler-winklevoss\/\">Tyler<\/a> Winklevoss claimed that DCG founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/barry-silbert\/\">Barry Silbert<\/a> owes Genesis $1.675 billion, and a part of his debt belonged to Gemini Earn users.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto exchange Bitvavo is expecting Digital Currency Group (DCG) to repay at least 80% of its debt to the exchange, according to a Reuters report.
