{"id":283737,"date":"2022-12-22T12:15:16","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T12:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=283737"},"modified":"2022-12-22T12:17:09","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T12:17:09","slug":"tornado-cash-developer-seeks-240k-salary-to-resurrect-protocol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tornado-cash-developer-seeks-240k-salary-to-resurrect-protocol\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornado Cash developer seeks $240K salary to resurrect protocol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Tornado Cash developer identified as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xgozzy\">Gozzy<\/a>&#8221; has initiated a <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tornadocash.community\/t\/15-remuneration-and-accounting\/44\/3\">proposal<\/a> to receive $240,000 in remuneration to continue development activities on the sanctioned mixing protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Gozzy wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Given the lack of assistance at hand, the complexity of the technology, and the potential legal litigations that may arise from my involvement with the organization, I am advocating for a competitive salary which stands at $240,000 per.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0916\">sanctioned<\/a> Tornado Cash in August for allegedly facilitating the laundering of over $7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>The OFAC sanction led to the arrest of Tornado Cash developer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/dutch-authority-says-arrested-tornado-cash-developer-suspected-of-involvement-in-financial-crimes\/\">Alexey Pertsev,<\/a> which forced Tornado DAO to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tornado-cash-contributor-reveals-dao-shut-down-as-it-cant-fight-the-us-need-to-keep-contributors-safe\/\">halt operations<\/a> to keep its members safe from further indictment.<\/p>\n<p>The payment will be issued at about $60,000 per quarter via a Sablier stream, which can be controlled on-chain through the governance process.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tornadocash.community\/t\/15-remuneration-and-accounting\/44\">proposal,<\/a> the developer's responsibilities will range from maintaining Tornado's website, moderating community activities, further developing the protocol, and providing educational resources for Tornado Cash users.<\/p>\n<p>The governance voting process on Gozzy's proposal is <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.tornadocash.community\/t\/15-remuneration-and-accounting\/44\/5\">scheduled<\/a> to commence on Dec. 24, for all surviving <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tornado-cash\/\">TORN<\/a> token holders.<\/p>\n<h2>Efforts to resurrect Tornado Cash<\/h2>\n<p>A Johns Hopkins professor called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/professor-re-uploads-tornado-cash-code-to-github-for-research-purposes\/\">Mattew Green<\/a><\/span> re-uploaded the Tornado Cash's source code days after it was removed from GitHub and said the codebase was crucial for teaching his students.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-crypto Congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-congressman-tom-emmer-urges-treasury-to-provide-further-clarity-related-to-tornado-cash-sanctions\/\">Tom Emmer<\/a> also called out the U.S. Treasury for sanctioning a permissionless protocol.
