{"id":269353,"date":"2022-10-21T11:30:36","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T10:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=269353"},"modified":"2022-10-21T11:29:38","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T10:29:38","slug":"cftc-aggressively-enforced-actions-against-18-crypto-related-cases-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-aggressively-enforced-actions-against-18-crypto-related-cases-in-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"CFTC aggressively enforced actions against 18 crypto-related cases in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said it has aggressively enforced 18 crypto-related legal actions in 2022 to show its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC's 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8613-22\">enforcement report<\/a> \u2014 released on Oct. 20\u00a0 \u2014 highlighted that it had imposed over $2.5 billion as fines against 82 legal actions involving commodity assets, including cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto-related actions represented over 20% of its enforcement, as 18 entities were indicted. The report highlighted actions against Ooki DAO, Digitx Futures, Gemini exchange, Tether, and Mirror Trading International.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC set a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-levies-250k-fine-on-bzerox-charges-ooki-dao-for-regulatory-violations\/\">precedent<\/a> on Sept. 22 after it charged \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ooki-protocol\/\">Ooki DAO<\/a> and imposed a $250,000 against. It claimed that the DAO offered illegal leverage and margin trading services and failed to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto exchange &#8220;Digitex Futures&#8221; was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8605-22\">charged<\/a> because of offering unregistered futures offerings, manipulating its native token DGTX, and failing to implement KYC and anti-money laundering measures.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC sued crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/the-cftc-is-suing-gemini-exchange-for-lying-five-years-ago\/\">Gemini<\/a> for allegedly providing false information about the vulnerability of the Futures Contracts to market manipulation back in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Stablecoin issuer Tether was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8450-21\">indicted<\/a> and imposed a fine of $41 million for making misleading statements about U.S. dollar holdings in its reserve.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa-based Mirror Trading International (MIT) was <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-charges-mirror-trading-international-with-alleged-fraud-of-1-7-billion-worth-of-bitcoin\/\">charged<\/a> for allegedly defrauding investors of over $1.7 billion worth of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam noted that the CFTC was out to aggressively prosecute bad actors in the crypto market. Behnam said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The FY 2022 enforcement report shows the CFTC continues to aggressively police new digital commodity asset markets with all of its available tools.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>More regulatory power coming to CFTC<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Earlier in June, several crypto exchanges showed their <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-may-become-main-regulator-for-crypto-industry\/\">support<\/a> for the CFTC to become the primary regulator for the crypto industry.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee moved to<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-senate-introduces-bill-to-put-cftc-in-charge-of-regulating-bitcoin-ethereum\/\"> introduce<\/a> a bill that will put the CFTC in charge of regulating digital commodities, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>In support of the lawmaker's proposal, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler said he wants more regulatory power to be given to CFTC as long &#8220;as it does not take away power from the SEC.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said it has aggressively enforced 18 crypto-related legal actions in 2022 to show its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market integrity.
