However, growth hit a wall in May, when Terra LUNA collapsed, and the collective market cap of the top four is down a significant amount.<\/p>\n<h2>The top four<\/h2>\n<p>Tether's (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">USDT<\/a>) market share stood at 90% n 2020 but has since called to roughly 50% as other stablecoins gained ground in the industry. The chart below shows the top four stablecoins by their market shares since the beginning of January 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-269194\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins.png 1800w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stablecoins-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In early 2020, USDT claimed over 90% of the stablecoin market share, while Circle's USD Coin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USDC<\/a>) claimed the majority of the remaining 10%.<\/p>\n<p>However, as of October, USDT's market share has fallen to roughly 50%, with USDC and Binance USD (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/binance-usd\/\">BUSD<\/a>) making up most of the remaining majority.<\/p>\n<h2>Stablecoin supply<\/h2>\n<p>Stablecoins have been steadily leaving exchanges since May, with only brief periods of respite between August and September.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-269193\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"930\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3.png 1800w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-3-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stablecoins leaving exchanges usually means they are being sold for fiat to meet debt obligations or being moved into a different asset class as investors lose trust n crypto.<\/p>\n<h2>Top 4 stablecoins vs. Ethereum<\/h2>\n<p>Ethereum's\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>) dominance over the top four stablecoins has been on a downtrend since May, with stablecoins becoming more dominant n June \u2014 when ETH hit its lowest price for the year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-269192\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2.png 1800w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stablecoins-2-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The top four stablecoins claiming dominance at such a period indicate that investors were inclined to exchange Ethereum for stablecoins in an effort to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>After the loss of confidence caused by the collapse of Terra's algorithmic stablecoin, this turn towards stablecoins is a positive development in restoring trust.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The top four stablecoins \u2014 USDT, USDC, BUSD and DAI \u2014 recorded exponential growth throughout 2021 and the first three months of 2022, reaching a peak market cap of $160 billion.
