{"id":267984,"date":"2022-10-14T12:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T11:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=267984"},"modified":"2022-10-14T11:58:44","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T10:58:44","slug":"tether-reduces-commercial-paper-reserves-for-usdt-to-zero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-reduces-commercial-paper-reserves-for-usdt-to-zero\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether reduces commercial paper reserves for USDT to zero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stablecoin issuer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">Tether<\/a> has eliminated commercial papers from its USDT reserve, according to its latest reserve update.<\/p>\n<p>Tether <a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/en\/tether-slashes-commercial-paper-to-zero\/\">announced<\/a> on Oct. 13 that it has cut its commercial paper to zero and will invest more in U.S. Treasury Bills and short-term government-issued debt.<\/p>\n<p>Tether said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Reducing commercial papers to zero demonstrates Tether's commitment to backing its tokens with the most secure reserves in the market.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Tether, holding its reserve in more secured assets will help increase the company's transparency and bring greater protection for investors' funds.<\/p>\n<p>Tether added that it improve its transparency by sharing details of the USDT reserve in its quarterly attestation reports.<\/p>\n<h2>Road to zero commercial paper<\/h2>\n<p>Since 2017, Tether has been criticized for lack of transparency on the nature of assets backing the USDT stablecoin. In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-claps-back-at-rumors-surrounding-its-commercial-paper-portfolio\/\">rumors<\/a> emerged that 85% of Tether's reserves were held in Chinese commercial papers.<\/p>\n<p>In defense, Tether said its reserve is comprised of less than 25% commercial paper but <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-claps-back-at-rumors-surrounding-its-commercial-paper-portfolio\/\">promised<\/a> to slash it down to zero by year-end.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Tether <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-reducing-commercial-paper-holdings-down-to-3-5-billion-by-end-july\/\">announced<\/a> that it has cut its commercial paper portfolio to a low of $3.5 billion, down from the previous high of $8.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of Sept. 30, Tether <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-reduces-commercial-paper-exposure-to-below-50m-treasury-bills-rise-to-58-1-of-reserve\/\">reported<\/a> that its commercial paper holdings sat below $50 million after $3 billion of the holdings expired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stablecoin issuer Tether has eliminated commercial papers from its USDT reserve, according to its latest reserve update.
