The upgrade was intended to stop the hacker from causing more harm.<\/p>\n<p>In the early hours of Oct. 7, Binance announced that the BNB Smart Chain has resumed operations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BNBCHAIN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BNBCHAIN<\/a> is back online. Fortunately, the attacker here only forged two messages, but the damage could have been far worse<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 samczsun (@samczsun) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samczsun\/status\/1578185275062132736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 7, 2022<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to security firm <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlockSecTeam\/status\/1578290988959035395?s=20&t=IPKbK68-k4PGf0fnphOoGw\">BlockSec,<\/a> the BSC bridge hack now ranks third in a list of 11 cross-chain bridges that have lost a cumulative $2 billion since July 2021.<\/p>\n<h2>Security risk of cross-chain bridges<\/h2>\n<p>The growing list of bridge hacks brings to mind <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/vitalik-buterin\/\">Vitalik Buterin's<\/a> argument against cross-chain bridges in a multi-chain future.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My argument for why the future will be *multi-chain*, but it will not be *cross-chain*: there are fundamental limits to the security of bridges that hop across multiple &#8220;zones of sovereignty&#8221;.
