He reached out to Avalanche's developer team and they promptly patched the vulnerability.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Publishing my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Avalanche?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Avalanche<\/a> vulnerability report from 29th March, 2022 that could have been used to take the entire network down at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was fixed way back, and with the latest Avalanche hard fork, all nodes run the patched software.<\/p>\n<p>Njoy \ud83d\ude42<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nokedKF7IZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/nokedKF7IZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 P\u00e9ter Szil\u00e1gyi (karalabe.eth) (@peter_szilagyi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peter_szilagyi\/status\/1567835617932808193?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The PeerList vulnerability<\/h2>\n<p>The Avalanche network communicates using a<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.avax.network\/nodes\/maintain\/avalanchego-config-flags\"> PeerList package<\/a> that can only be sent by node validators. Szil\u00e1gyi explained that the vulnerability was such that all an attacker needed was to stake 2000 <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/avalanche\/\">AVAX<\/a> tokens required to be a validator node and send out a malicious PeerList package to nodes on the network.<\/p>\n<p>Szil\u00e1gyi explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Since all nodes in the network connect to all validators, it's pretty much an insta-death for the entire network.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The price is of course 2000AVAX, but I kind of find that acceptable since a nice short would net a sweet profit and the network would rebound anyway after a few hours so no long term value lost in the malicious validator.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As of March 2022, the market capitalization of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/avalanche\/\">Avalanche<\/a> network was estimated at over $24 billion. The crash of the ecosystem would have been fatal if a malicious attacker had hijacked the vulnerability.<\/p>\n<h2>Avalanche's battle with bugs<\/h2>\n<p>During the launch of the DeFi protocol Pangolin on Avalanche in February 2021, the network suffered a &#8220;cross-chain finality&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/Heavy load on the system triggered a non-deterministic bug related to state verification. This caused some validators to accept some invalid mint transactions, while the rest of the network refused to honor these transactions and stalled the C-chain. This was an invalid mint, not a double spend. Independent transactions on the X-chain continued to process. The network did not halt.\">bug<\/a> that forced it to enter a &#8220;self-healing mode.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Avalanche experienced a heavy network load that caused some validators to accept some invalid mint transactions. Consequently, the network had to halt all transactions for hours.
