{"id":260102,"date":"2022-09-06T20:23:55","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T19:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=260102"},"modified":"2022-09-06T21:16:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T20:16:00","slug":"russia-to-settle-cross-border-payments-using-stablecoins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/russia-to-settle-cross-border-payments-using-stablecoins\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia to settle cross-border payments using stablecoins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseyev has\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/economy\/1503567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">confirmed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that Russia is working with crypto-friendly countries to facilitate cross-border payments using stablecoins as sanctions from U.S and U.K. mount, local news TASS reported on Sept. 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Finance Minister and Central Bank had earlier agreed that Russia can't do without cross-border settlements in cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Consequently, Russia is developing a digital platform that will allow it to settle cross-border transactions with more friendly countries using commodity-backed stablecoins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Moiseyev said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We are currently working with a number of countries to create bilateral platforms in order not to use dollars and euros. We offer mutually acceptable tokenized instruments that will be used on these platforms, which are essentially clearing platforms that we are currently developing with these countries.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Moiseyev added that the plan is to develop a stablecoin that will be pegged to recognized instruments like gold, so the value is &#8220;clear and observable for all participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Russia turning to Stablecoin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The increased sanction against Russia has left the country with little option but to explore alternative payment methods using stablecoins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Earlier in July, Russia's Central Bank and Ministry of Finance\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/russians-central-bank-and-ministry-of-finance-clash-over-stablecoins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">agreed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that a low-risk stablecoin could suffice for its use as global sanction mounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Head of the Ministry of Finance Ivan Chebeskov\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www-vedomosti-ru.translate.goog\/finance\/articles\/2022\/07\/11\/930783-tsb-prokommentiroval-ideyu-sozdaniya?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">argued<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that a viable stablecoin could be backed by Russia's currency &#8220;ruble&#8221; or any physical assets such as gold, oil, or grain to guarantee face value redemptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crypto important for Russia's survival<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Russian Ministry of Finance has been working to see that the country becomes crypto-friendly as it has proved to be a tool to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ukraine-seizes-19500-from-crypto-wallet-dedicated-to-supporting-russian-forces\/\">evade<\/a> sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In April, the Finance Ministry was <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/russia-to-legalize-crypto-as-means-of-payment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reportedly<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0working on the &#8220;on digital currency&#8221; bill which will see crypto legalized as a means of payment and validated as an investment class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A senior official of Russia's Central Bank also<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-russia-cryptocurrency\/russias-central-bank-sees-space-for-crypto-in-international-trade-idUSR4N2X3018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0said<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the country was open to allowing the use of cryptocurrencies for international payments.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseyev has\u00a0confirmed that Russia is working with crypto-friendly countries to facilitate cross-border payments using stablecoins as sanctions from U.S and U.K. mount, local news TASS reported on Sept. 6.
