What&#39;s happening today is the Bellatrix hard fork, which *prepares* the chain for the merge. Still important though &#8211; make sure to update your clients!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/1566993505326710785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 6, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Each Ethereum node is run on two layers, the consensus layer (&#8216;C layer') and the proof-of-work (PoS) layer \u2014 currently the main network \u2014 which communicates via an Application Programming Interface. When the two layers combine, the Ethereum network will transition to a PoS system.<\/p>\n<p>The Merge is a two-phase event. The first event is the Bellatrix network upgrade on the consensus layer triggered by an epoch height.<\/p>\n<p>Once the execution layer reaches or exceeds, the specific <span class=\"chakra-text css-ons8vw\">Total Difficulty<\/span> threshold called\u00a0<span class=\"chakra-text css-ons8vw\">TTD<\/span>, the second and final phase of the\u00a0 Merge will be triggered in what is called the &#8220;Paris event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Paris Upgrade will mark the end of proof-of-work mining on the Ethereum Blockchain and the successful completion of the Merge.<\/p>\n<p>However, only 73% of Ethereum nodes have completed the mandated upgrade and are designated as &#8220;Merge ready&#8221; at the time of writing, based on data from <a href=\"https:\/\/ethernodes.org\/merge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ethernodes.org\/merge\">Ethernodes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 27.4% of node operators are flagged as &#8220;not ready&#8221; at press time, meaning they have less than a day to update their nodes. Ethereum developer Tim Beiko took to Twitter to push node operators to update their consensus layer clients ahead of the Bellatrix upgrade:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bellatrix is tomorrow \ud83d\udcc6 Last chance to upgrade your node if you haven\u2019t yet! <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re mergiiiing \ud83d\udc3c <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0VQ9zb6wjN\">https:\/\/t.co\/0VQ9zb6wjN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tim Beiko | timbeiko.eth \ud83d\udc3c (@TimBeiko) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimBeiko\/status\/1566898043156561920?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Ethereum Foundation also cautioned node operators that if they don't upgrade their nodes before the Bellatrix hard fork, it will cause their Ethereum clients to &#8220;sync to the pre-fork blockchain,&#8221; warning:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Node operators] will be stuck on an incompatible chain following old rules and will be unable to send Ether or operate on the post-Merge Ethereum network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holders of ETH do not need to do anything with their funds or wallet, as the genesis will remain intact and unchanged after the Merge. Holders will have no problem accessing their funds.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Ethereum Foundation warned that users should be wary of scams that may try to take advantage of holders during the upgrade. It instructed users against sending their ETH anywhere in an attempt to upgrade to ETH2 and that ETH tokens do not exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens after the Merge?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Shanghai upgrade is scheduled to follow the Merge, enabling stakers to withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for sharding will also be underway to enable the most optimal solution to distribute the responsibility of storing compressed call data from rollup contracts, thereby allowing higher scalability and network capacity on the Ethereum network.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bellatrix upgrade was activated at epoch 144896 on the Beacon Chain and is now live. welcome to the world, Bellatrix pic.twitter.com\/q31itowPbR &mdash; trent.eth (@trent_vanepps) September 6, 2022 The Paris upgrade is next, and once activated, it will complete the Ethereum network&#8217;s transition to the proof-of-stake system.
