{"id":258701,"date":"2022-09-01T05:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T04:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=258701"},"modified":"2022-09-01T01:28:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T00:28:42","slug":"crypto-startup-wins-cybersquatting-dispute-against-deloitte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-startup-wins-cybersquatting-dispute-against-deloitte\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto startup wins cybersquatting dispute against Deloitte"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto startup Don\u2019t Know Your Customer has managed to avoid a cybersquatting complaint brought by accounting giant Deloitte over its domain name.<\/p>\n<p>Web3 design\u00a0 and branding firm Penultimate Media Systems registered DontKYC.com for its crypto client, which claims to be a non-profit community that operates on the Binance Smart chain while offering prepaid cards that offer anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte disapproves the domain owner abbreviated its service as DKYC on its <a href=\"https:\/\/dontkyc.com\/\">website<\/a>. The accounting firm argued that the disputed domain name is highly similar to its own trademark as it uses the acryonym in the same form.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a\">Deloitte even accused DKYC's website of being illegal and emphasized the alleged damaging effects the startup's use of the disputed domain name on the <\/span><span class=\"a\">accounting firm's reputation. The accounting firm explained that the crypto startup is <\/span><span class=\"a\">promoting anonymous financial transactions that directly contradicts its own<\/span><span class=\"a\" style=\"color: #333333;\"> \u201cknowyour<\/span><span class=\"a\" style=\"color: #333333;\">client\u201d service, which is concerned with identification and traceabili<span class=\"l6\">ty of clients\u00a0in the financial world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The World Intellectual Property Organization published its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/amc\/en\/domains\/decisions\/pdf\/2022\/d2022-1775.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/domainnamewire.com\/2022\/08\/30\/crypto-company-defeats-deloitte-in-cybersquatting-dispute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Domain Name Wire<\/a>, which argued that Deloitte failed to show that the domain was used in bad faith.<\/p>\n<p data-wahpro-txt-style=\"font-size: 22px;\">In response to the accusations, DKYC claims it does not know of Deloitte\u2019s trademark and has researched the the US Patent and Trademark Office before registering the domain name.<\/p>\n<p data-wahpro-txt-style=\"font-size: 22px;\">As of May 6 2022, the startup is currently rebranding to &#8220;ShadowFi&#8221; and counters Deloitte's accusation that the domain name is being used illicitly by emphasizing the difference between money laundering and the everyday spending services it offers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ff4\"><span class=\"a\">&#8220;We stand 100% behind the prevention of financial<\/span><span class=\"a\">fraud and terrorism,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/amc\/en\/domains\/decisions\/pdf\/2022\/d2022-1775.pdf\">said DKYC in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p data-wahpro-txt-style=\"font-size: 22px;\">The startup bridges decentralized finance (DeFi) and anonymous spending in the real-word and operates on the Binance Smart Chain. &#8220;Invest on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) while funding your everyday life.\u00a0Our vendor doesn\u2019t know who we are, and we don\u2019t know who you are. No ID required.
