{"id":251765,"date":"2022-08-01T22:00:35","date_gmt":"2022-08-01T21:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=251765"},"modified":"2022-08-01T19:49:37","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T18:49:37","slug":"north-koreans-reportedly-targeting-crypto-jobs-for-insider-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/north-koreans-reportedly-targeting-crypto-jobs-for-insider-access\/","title":{"rendered":"North Koreans reportedly targeting crypto jobs for insider access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto thieves from North Korea are impersonating experts using fake resumes and identities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-01\/north-koreans-suspected-of-using-fake-resumes-to-steal-crypto?srnd=cryptocurrencies-v2\"><span class=\"s4\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a> News reported Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bloomberg, interviews with cybersecurity experts showed that these fraudsters actively plagiarize information from legitimate profiles to apply for jobs on Indeed and LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<h2>North Korean thieves targeting crypto jobs<\/h2>\n<p>Cybersecurity company Mandiant reported that a suspected North Korean job seeker claimed to be an \u201cinnovative and strategic thinking professional,\u201d adding, \u201cThe world will see the great result from my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the applicant claimed to be an experienced software developer, researchers at the firm found strikingly similar language on someone else\u2019s profile.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond plagiarizing resumes, researchers also discovered that some suspected North Koreans doctored qualifications when applying for jobs.<\/p>\n<p>These include lying about publishing the whitepaper for the Bibox crypto exchange or posing as a senior software developer. The researchers added that several employers had hired these suspected North Koreans as freelancers.<\/p>\n<h2>Why crypto jobs?<\/h2>\n<p>The principal analyst at Mandiant, Joe Dobson, said the new scheme could be a way to gather intelligence about cryptocurrency trends before they happen. Dobson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It comes down to insider threats. If someone gets hired onto a crypto project, and they become a core developer, that allows them to influence things, whether for good or not.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, the researchers pointed out that some of these activities might be state-sponsored to give the DPRK government an edge in laundering illicit funds from crypto crimes.<\/p>\n<p>While North Korean authorities have constantly denied being sponsors of crypto crimes, available <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-claims-north-koreas-lazarus-group-responsible-for-axie-infinity-hack\/\">public information<\/a> says otherwise.<\/p>\n<h2>The US had previously warned of this threat<\/h2>\n<p>The new report supports an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-federal-agencies-warn-businesses-against-mistakenly-hiring-north-korean-hackers\/\">warning<\/a> from the US government that North Korean IT workers were trying to get foreign freelancing positions by posing as citizens of other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-page advisory released two months ago claimed that the IT workers focus on \u201cfreelance contracts from employers located in wealthier nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Google warns of fake job sites<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Google also reported that suspected hackers from North Korea had replicated several popular job websites such as Indeed.com and ZipRecruiter to gather information from visitors and possibly steal their data.<\/p>\n<p>In such cases, they gather information from job seekers and send malicious software to access their data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto thieves from North Korea are impersonating experts using fake resumes and identities, Bloomberg News reported Aug. 1.
