{"id":250191,"date":"2022-07-26T09:50:30","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T08:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=250191"},"modified":"2022-07-26T09:43:06","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T08:43:06","slug":"sec-is-investigating-coinbase-over-securities-listing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-is-investigating-coinbase-over-securities-listing\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC is investigating Coinbase over &#8216;securities&#8217; listing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating whether Coinbase allowed Americans to trade unregistered security assets, Bloomberg News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-26\/coinbase-faces-sec-investigation-over-cryptocurrency-listings#xj4y7vzkg\">reported<\/a> on July 26.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC has doubled its investigation of the crypto exchange since it increased the number of listed tokens on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase now lists over 150 cryptocurrencies; after keeping the number of listed tokens to a minimum for years. The exchange started listing more tokens in 2021 to compete with its rivals.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Coinbase's chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, <span class=\"s4\">tweeted that the exchange was &#8220;look(ing) forward to engaging with the SEC on the matter.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m happy to say it again and again: we are confident that our rigorous diligence process\u2014a process the SEC has already reviewed\u2014keeps securities off our platform, and we look forward to engaging with the SEC on the matter. The publicly listed crypto exchange has severally criticized some of the regulator's actions over the crypto space.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent matchup saw Coinbase vehemently <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-denies-listing-securities-says-sec-should-provide-regulatory-framework\/\">deny<\/a> listing securities after the SEC <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ex-coinbase-manager-arrested-in-insider-trading-case-for-leaking-asset-listing-details\/\">sued<\/a> an ex-employee of the exchange on July 21 over allegations of insider trading.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit, nine digital tokens traded by the men were securities. Coinbase listed seven of these tokens.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the exchange\u00a0published a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/coinbase-does-not-list-securities-end-of-story-e58dc873be79\"><span class=\"s4\">blog post<\/span><\/a> reiterating that it did not list securities and advised the SEC to focus on providing a regulatory framework for the crypto industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the absence of a concrete digital asset securities regulatory framework from the SEC, we remain confident that Coinbase's rigorous review process keeps securities off Coinbase's platform.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The exchange's CEO Brian Armstrong also wrote a strongly worded Twitter thread in 2021 when the SEC threatened to sue the firm if it went ahead with its lending product.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ Some really sketchy behavior coming out of the SEC recently.<br \/>Story time\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Brian Armstrong &#8211; barmstrong.eth (@brian_armstrong) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brian_armstrong\/status\/1435439291715358721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to Armstrong, the SEC exhibited some &#8220;sketchy behavior&#8221; over its oversight of the crypto space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating whether Coinbase allowed Americans to trade unregistered security assets, Bloomberg News reported on July 26.
