{"id":249748,"date":"2022-07-22T18:20:57","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T17:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=249748"},"modified":"2022-07-22T19:16:38","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T18:16:38","slug":"blockchain-com-downsizes-by-25-after-3ac-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blockchain-com-downsizes-by-25-after-3ac-collapse\/","title":{"rendered":"Blockchain.com downsizes by 25% after 3AC collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/3ac-founders-in-hiding-offices-abandoned-as-court-filing-cites-fear-that-assets-may-be-disposed-of\/\">Three Arrows Capital<\/a> (3AC) fallout, crypto exchange giant Blockchain.com announced the closing of its office in Argentina and letting 150 people go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/21\/crypto-firm-blockchaincom-lays-off-25percent-of-staff-as-3ac-fallout-spreads.html\">downsize<\/a> by 25%.<\/p>\n<p>Almost half the layoffs were from Argentina (about 44%), while 26% and 16% were from the U.S. and the U.K., respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain.com had lent around $270 million worth of crypto assets to 3AC. Since 3AC went bankrupt, Blockchain.com is expecting to lose that investment.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to closing the Argentina office, the company abandoned all expansion plans. Blockchain.com said they had to take these measures due to harsh market conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>Blockchain.com<\/h2>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitoasis-joins-layoff-spree-firing-5-of-staff\/\">many crypto companies<\/a> chose to downsize during the early days of the bear market, Blockchain.com hadn't.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto exchange platform Blockchain.com has been active since 2012. Nearly one-third of all <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> transactions go through Blockchain.com's wallet product. The company was valued at <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/new-funding-round-values-blockchain-com-at-14-billion\/\">$14 billion<\/a> in a funding round in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent names like \u00a0American hedge fund manager Kyle Bass and British tycoon Richard Branson are among the many who support Blockchain.com. At the time, the company was considered one of the most valuable crypto companies.<\/p>\n<h2>Firing trend<\/h2>\n<p>Many major crypto companies have announced layoffs since the beginning of the bear market. The firing trend spread so much that the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finra.org\/\">Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)<\/a> announced it is looking to hire from amongst those laid off.<\/p>\n<p>The first company to decide on downsizing was <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/gemini\/\">Gemini<\/a>. The exchange let <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/gemini-reducing-staff-by-10-to-survive-crypto-winter\/\">10%<\/a> of its staff go on June 2 and another <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/gemini-announces-another-15-reduction-in-staff-amid-crypto-winter\/\">15%<\/a> on July 19. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-un-hires-new-recruits-due-to-market-conditions\/\">Coinbase<\/a> followed Gemini's first layoffs by un-hiring recruits on June 4. Many crypto companies, including \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-com-will-fire-260-people-shrinking-by-5\/\">Crypto.com<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/26\/robinhood-to-lay-off-9-of-full-time-employees\/\">Robinhood<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/finra-ceo-welcomes-crypto-employees-who-were-laid-off-as-agency-increases-focus-on-digital-assets\/\">BlockFi<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/04\/bitmex-crypto-exchange-lays-off-a-quarter-of-staff-after-failed-acquisition\/\">Bitmex<\/a>, announced layoffs in the following weeks.<\/p>\n<p>These companies pointed to the bear market conditions as a reason for the layoffs.
