{"id":246186,"date":"2022-06-30T18:13:18","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T17:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=246186"},"modified":"2022-06-30T20:46:43","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T19:46:43","slug":"coinbase-reportedly-has-contract-with-ice-to-provide-users-geo-location-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-reportedly-has-contract-with-ice-to-provide-users-geo-location-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase reportedly has contract with ICE to provide users&#8217; geo-location data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cryptocurrency exchange\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coinbase's<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> analytics program, Coinbase Tracer, is reportedly providing users' data to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/techinquiry.org\/FOIA\/Coinbase-ICE-Analytics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">contract<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0obtained by the WatchDog group Tech Inquiry, the information will include &#8220;historical geo-tracking data&#8221; and transaction history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The document, released via a Freedom of Information Act request, shows that ICE is now able to track transactions made through 12 supported digital currencies on the platform, including Bitcoin (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">BTC<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), Ethereum (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ETH<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), Bitcoin Cash (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">BCH<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), XRP (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/xrp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">XRP<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) and Tether (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">USDT<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Analytical features include &#8220;Multi-hop link Analysis for incoming and outgoing funds,&#8221; which grants ICE insight into transfers of these currencies. It also includes &#8220;Transaction demixing and shielded transaction analysis,&#8221; aimed at thwarting methods that some cryptocurrency users take to launder their funds or hide their transactions, for example, by using coin mixers. These features are designed to combat illicit activity involving digital currencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This data will be used to help Homeland Security identify crypto investors and users who have used the Coinbase platform. This follows from the previously known three-year deal between the cryptocurrency exchange and ICE. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The agreement was finalized in <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-scores-deal-with-us-government-after-sec-alarms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">September last year<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with a value of up to almost $1.4 million and is one of several additional contracts between the crypto exchange and US government organizations. In 2020, Coinbase signed a <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-ceo-explains-why-they-sell-blockchain-analytics-software-to-the-u-s-secret-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">four-year contract<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0worth $180,000 to provide the Secret Service with transactional information software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The service that is currently known as Coinbase Tracer was once known as Coinbase Analytics. This service has also been subject to criticism in the past. In 2019, Coinbase\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-acquires-blockchain-analytics-and-intelligence-startup-neutrino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">purchased the exchange section<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of Neutrino, the blockchain intelligence company that initially developed the software. Also, in 2019, a Coinbase executive stated that its partners were <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/examining-the-deletecoinbase-controversy-is-coinbase-selling-user-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;selling client data to outside sources,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0raising privacy concerns for the exchange platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Coinbase released a statement on the matter, saying it is not customer data being sold to ICE:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;As explained on our website, Coinbase Analytics, now Coinbase Tracer, is a compliance solution that Coinbase offers to governments, financial institutions, and crypto businesses. It enables them to investigate financial crimes including money laundering and terrorist financing.
