{"id":243880,"date":"2022-06-17T13:15:59","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T12:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=243880"},"modified":"2022-06-21T03:19:21","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T02:19:21","slug":"makerdao-votes-to-disable-aave-dai-deposit-to-stave-off-celsius-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/makerdao-votes-to-disable-aave-dai-deposit-to-stave-off-celsius-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"MakerDAO votes to disable Aave DAI deposit to stave off Celsius risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MakerDAO has announced the removal of the leading lending platform, Aave, as one of those with direct deposit module (D3M) access to its lending pool.<\/p>\n<p>The decentralized organization has decided to protect its protocol in case the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/celsius-network\/\">Celsius<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-pauses-withdrawals-amid-market-turmoil-triggering-74-drop-in-cel\/\">crisis<\/a> affects\u00a0the stETH peg too.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Maker Governance has voted to temporarily disable the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaveAave?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AaveAave<\/a> DAI Direct Deposit Module (D3M).<\/p>\n<p>This change is available for execution on June 17 2022 21:03 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\uddf3 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3wKQiEvcMw\">https:\/\/t.co\/3wKQiEvcMw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maker (@MakerDAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MakerDAO\/status\/1537217115677130754?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 15, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.makerdao.com\/t\/signal-request-set-the-aave-d3m-dc-to-0-zero\/15775\/14\">arguments<\/a> in support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.makerdao.com\/t\/urgent-signal-request-set-aave-d3m-bar-to-0\/15800\">proposal,<\/a> the move is necessary because:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Out of 200m DAI borrowed on Aave Ethereum v2, 100m DAI is being borrowed by Celsius and collateralized mostly by stETH.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, considering the preceding, the protocol is looking to protect its users from the high risk of borrowing stablecoins that stETH collateralizes.<\/p>\n<h2>MakerDAO approves stETH replacement<\/h2>\n<p>MakerDAO has deepened its attempt to cut off its exposure to stETH, as the DAO has <a href=\"https:\/\/vote.makerdao.com\/polling\/QmfMswF2#poll-detail\">approved<\/a> a new proposal that would see it adopt Rocket Pool ETH (rETH) as its new type of collateral.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Maker Governance has voted to add rETH (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rocket_Pool?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Rocket_Pool<\/a> staked ETH) as a new collateral type in the Maker Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Voting results:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 40,858 MKR voted YES (winning option)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 22,163 MKR voted NO.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 0.22 MKR voted ABSTAIN.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\uddf3 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tBuFUuL2dS\">https:\/\/t.co\/tBuFUuL2dS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cZGLRG6rk2\">pic.twitter.com\/cZGLRG6rk2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maker (@MakerDAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MakerDAO\/status\/1537529666931675139?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>rETH and stETH are similar in operation as they both can be redeemed 1:1 for ETH once the Merge is live. However, unlike stETH, which depegged from Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>), rETH is currently trading for $1093 \u2014 at par with ETH.<\/p>\n<p>The move further indicates Maker's intention to reduce its exposure to assets that are currently in peril.<\/p>\n<h2>Aave is voting on pausing ETH borrowing and freezing stETH<\/h2>\n<p>In a separate development on Aave, a proposal has been made to the decentralized finance protocol to freeze stETH, increase the liquidity threshold of staked Ethereum to 90% and pause Ethereum borrowing on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>According to the proposal, it is designed to &#8220;mitigate risk to Aave v2 markets relating to the price deviation of stETH\/ETH.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The proposal continued that many users have deposited stETH and borrowed Ethereum, meaning if the divergence in the price of both assets continued, several positions would have to be liquidated on Aave.<\/p>\n<p>As of press time, 88% of Aave users have <a href=\"https:\/\/app.aave.com\/governance\/proposal\/83\/\">voted<\/a> against the proposal, with one of them <a href=\"https:\/\/governance.aave.com\/t\/staked-eth-and-aave-risk-june-11th-update\/8469\/2\">arguing<\/a> that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As long as the potential damage is bearable, I think the markets should be kept up as I believe one of the primary purposes of AAVE is precisely to allow this kind of speculation and market activity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MakerDAO has announced the removal of the leading lending platform, Aave, as one of those with direct deposit module (D3M) access to its lending pool.
