{"id":243075,"date":"2022-06-14T14:10:22","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T13:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=243075"},"modified":"2022-06-14T13:59:51","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T12:59:51","slug":"nyc-mayor-plans-to-ask-governor-hochul-to-veto-crypto-mining-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nyc-mayor-plans-to-ask-governor-hochul-to-veto-crypto-mining-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Mayor plans to ask Governor Hochul to veto crypto mining bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eric Adams, the incumbent Mayor of New York City, plans to ask\u00a0 Governor Kathy Hochul to veto a bill looking to impose a two-year ban on Proof-of-Work (PoW), Adams told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/politics\/eric-adams-plans-ask-kathy-hochul-veto-albany-cryptomining-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crain\u2019s New York Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking out against the New York Assembly Bill A7389C, Adams said it would cause New York residents significant economic damage if passed into law. He added that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When you look at the billions of dollars that are spent on cryptocurrency \u2013 New York is the leader. We can\u2019t continue to put barriers in place.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adams has a pro-crypto stance and previously vowed to accept his first three paychecks in crypto. Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nyc-mayor-fulfills-promise-to-receive-paycheck-in-bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made good on his promise<\/a> in January after receiving his first paycheck in Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>) and Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETH<\/a>), even as the tokens continued plunging from their November 2021 peaks.<\/p>\n<p>Bill A7389C passed the State Assembly in late April and won the approval of the majority of New York Senators on June 3. The bill now awaits Hochul\u2019s signature to become a law. However, the governor is yet to commit to signing the bill into law.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul previously <a href=\"https:\/\/ms-my.facebook.com\/govkathyhochul\/videos\/governor-hochul-delivers-remarks\/714071333250709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is a balancing act that's involved here. I understand the passion on both sides of the issue here. We have to balance the protection of the environment, but also protect the opportunity for jobs that don't see a lot of activity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The bill\u2019s sponsor claims it fosters innovation<\/h2>\n<p>While Adams believes passing Bill A7389C into law will take a toll on the New York economy, Anna Kelles &#8211; the lawmaker that wrote and sponsored the bill &#8211; thinks it might encourage more innovation, said this during an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/13\/adams-urges-hochul-to-veto-fossil-fuel-fed-crypto-mining-moratorium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on Adams\u2019 decision to support crypto miners, Kelles said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It took me by surprise and it\u2019s deeply disappointing because he suggests this bill would negatively impact cryptocurrency in upstate NY [but] what he is doing is asking us to go back to the stone age of cryptocurrency.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before this, Kelles <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/lawmaker-behind-ny-crypto-mining-bill-clarifies-it-is-not-a-blanket-pow-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clarified<\/a> that the bill does not call for a blanket ban on PoW mining.
