It signals an end to PoW on Ethereum, leading to a new, more scalable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly future.<\/p>\n<p>According to Core Dev <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/preston_vanloon\/status\/1526934478916132865\">@preston_vanloon<\/a>, the rollout is scheduled for June 8.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ropsten testnet is getting merged on June 8! <\/p>\n<p>Merging Ropsten is a huge testing milestone towards Ethereum&#39;s mainnet merge later this year.  \ud83c\udf89 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/X7eLIMA72g\">https:\/\/t.co\/X7eLIMA72g<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; prestonvanloon.eth @ Permissionless (@preston_vanloon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/preston_vanloon\/status\/1526934478916132865?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Ethereum<\/h2>\n<p>Ethereum devs previously said the mainnet Merge would happen in June, but in April, dev <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereums-merge-will-no-longer-happen-in-june-new-date-unknown\/\">Tim Beiko<\/a> announced on Twitter that the upgrade is being delayed to late 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It won't be June, but likely in the few months after. No firm date yet, but we're definitely in the final chapter of PoW on Ethereum.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beiko's announcement was met with debate amongst the Ethereum community about when the Merge would happen. Based on code review and running test nodes, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/CryptoCurrency\/comments\/u2e53n\/looks_like_the_eth_merge_is_delayed_to_latter\/\">unnamed pool operator<\/a> gave a guestimate of early 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Others \u2014 including the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/weekinethereumnews.com\/\">Week in Ethereum News<\/a>, Evan Van Ness \u2014 said the Merge was off schedule rather than delayed. Van Ness said switching over to PoS requires coordinating with &#8220;the bomb,&#8221; which is notoriously difficult to predict due to the volatile nature of hashrate and price.<\/p>\n<p>The bomb refers to a process that makes mining progressively more challenging and more unprofitable over time. It is considered a transition phase to ween miners off the network to be replaced by validators under a PoS system.<\/p>\n<h2>All systems go<\/h2>\n<p>Van Ness added that the delay, which isn't a delay, will be several weeks and not early 2023 as some had predicted. Given that the testnet Merge is scheduled for June 8, Van Ness' call was proven accurate.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/preston_vanloon\/status\/1526934478916132865\">Van Loon<\/a>, the testnet is a significant step forward to the mainnet Merge later this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&#8220;Merging Ropsten is a huge testing milestone towards Ethereum's mainnet merge later this year.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Barring the discovery of critical bugs, the Merge will finally roll out in Q3\/Q4.
