{"id":236423,"date":"2022-05-09T14:20:42","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T13:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=236423"},"modified":"2022-05-09T11:59:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T10:59:43","slug":"uk-thieves-targeting-phones-to-steal-crypto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/uk-thieves-targeting-phones-to-steal-crypto\/","title":{"rendered":"UK thieves targeting phones to steal crypto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thieves in the U.K. are now mugging digital investors and stealing victims' phones to access their crypto investments, the <em>Guardian <\/em>reported, citing London Police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city of London police <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">informed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the newspaper of the rise in tech-savvy crimes to raise awareness and to warn residents to be cautious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Crypto mugging on the rise<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several people claim they lost thousands of pounds worth of crypto after muggers took possession of their phones. One victim claimed he lost \u00a35,000 in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>) from his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> account after a gang of muggers took control of his phone for some minutes before returning it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another victim said a mugger forced him to open his phone with a fingerprint, changed his security settings, and stole \u00a328,700, including cryptocurrency. While some muggers return the victim's phones after stealing crypto assets, some victims lose their phones entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One victim said he lost his phone and cards to pickpockets after an evening at the pub only to find out that they'd stolen \u00a310,000 from his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/crypto-com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> account. According to the report, the thieves may have targeted the victim after seeing him type his account pin in public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rate of these activities, which David Gerard, the author of Attack on the 50 Foot Blockchain, described as &#8220;crypto mugging,&#8221; is concerning. One of the main concerns of crypto investors is security, and with the rise of this kind of crime, it appears their funds are not only at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/hacker-self-destructs-1m-loot-gained-from-defi-exploit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of hackers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the immutable nature of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blockchain-tech-could-add-almost-2-trillion-to-global-economy-says-pwc-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, transactions on the blockchain cannot be reversed once they are executed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Chainalysis CTO says police can trace these crimes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/chainalysis\/\">Chainalysis<\/a> CTO Gurvais Grigg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes that police should be able to trace these crimes. Grigg, an FBI veteran, said government agencies should theoretically be able to track crypto-asset movement using the digital paper trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his words,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0To [transfer stolen assets], they have to provide a wallet address and, most likely, they'll use that wallet address again in the future. You also need to bring it to an exchange if you want to turn it into fiat currency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reported incidents took place in the last six months of 2021.
