{"id":235541,"date":"2022-05-03T05:00:31","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T04:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=235541"},"modified":"2025-04-10T18:41:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T17:41:58","slug":"bitcoin-mining-council-thinks-tesla-may-accept-btc-again-for-this-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-mining-council-thinks-tesla-may-accept-btc-again-for-this-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin Mining Council report &#8211; Tesla may accept BTC again for this reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bitcoin Mining Council has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinminingcouncil.com\/bitcoin-mining-council-survey-confirms-year-on-year-improvements-in-sustainable-power-mix-and-technological-efficiency\/\">report<\/a> that confirms that 58.4% of Bitcoin mining comes from a &#8220;sustainable electricity mix.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk famously <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1404132183254523905?s=20&t=Hoa0_3d53Y6kNoECB6u2dQ\">said<\/a> that Tesla would start <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-resume-bitcoin-acceptance-if-majority-of-miners-go-green\/\">accepting<\/a> [cs_coin]BTC[\/cs_coin] when<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0&#8220;there\u2019s confirmation of reasonable (~50%) clean energy usage by miners with positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing Bitcoin transactions.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Bitcoin Mining Council and Elon Musk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1396914548167233537\">joined<\/a> a call with the council in 2021 to discuss the future of Bitcoin mining and its potential to move towards renewable energy. He stated that the result of the call was &#8220;promising.&#8221; Thus, there have been open lines of communication between the Tesla CEO and the council in the past. Whether the communication is still available is unknown, but Bitcoin investors will be keen to know if and when, Musk will again declare his support of the leading cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>The rationale for exploring whether Tesla will again accept Bitcoin comes from the fact that when they first made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/08\/tesla-buys-1point5-billion-in-bitcoin.html\">announcement<\/a>, the price of Bitcoin rose over 50% in the following two weeks. Then, just a few months later, Musk took to Twitter to announce that Tesla would no longer accept Bitcoin due to concerns that mining was too reliant on fossil fuel power.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tesla & Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YSswJmVZhP\">pic.twitter.com\/YSswJmVZhP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392602041025843203?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoin's energy usage<\/h2>\n<p>Several months after the announcement, a Chinese ban on bitcoin mining <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-btc-hashrate-rose-by-over-30-since-july-heres-what-it-means\/\">dropped<\/a> the global hashrate by over 50% and removed many fossil-fueled Bitcoin mines. Many criticized Musk's decision, claiming that Bitcoin was already mined using a majority of renewable energy even before the closure of Chinese fossil-fueled Bitcoin mines.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Growth at Kraken, Dan Held, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danheld\/status\/1404176279310643207\">replied<\/a> directly, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #333333\">Over 74% is powered by clean energy.&#8221; <\/span>Further, in response to the move for Tesla to stop accepting Bitcoin, Nigel Green, CEO of the deVere Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nigeljgreen\/status\/1392742757677076482\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"60\">said<\/a>. &#8220;Those issues surrounding the environmental impact have not come up in the last few months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.movies.yahoo.com\/tesla-gains-results-show-dependence-053528438.html\">historically<\/a> made a lot\u00a0of its income through the sale of carbon credits. Critics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-tesla-bitcoin-bad-for-the-environment-carbon-emissions-2021-5?r=US&IR=T\">questioned<\/a> whether the move was made due to a need to ensure Tesla continued to be capable of earning money through carbon credit sales.<\/p>\n<h2>Will Tesla accept Bitcoin again?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the critical factors Musk listed for Tesla to accept Bitcoin as means of payment was, the need for a positive trend regarding renewable energy usage in mining. Earlier this year, the council stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/46-bitcoin-miners-employ-renewable-energy-sources-to-mine-bitcoin-bmc\/\">just 46%<\/a> of Bitcoin mining used renewable energy. A recent report said that the use of renewable energy by the\u00a0 Bitcoin network,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;had increased approximately 59% year-on-year, from Q1 2021 to Q1 2022, making it one of the most sustainable industries globally.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinminingcouncil.com\/\">council<\/a> comprises core members of the Bitcoin mining community, including, Hive, Hut8, Riot, Marathon, Microstrategy, BlockFi, and Argo, to name a few.
