The move could result in several first-time buyers of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who previously had no exposure to the digital asset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Fidelity 401(k) to introduce Bitcoin investments\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking on the development, Fidelity's head of workplace retirement offerings and platforms, Dave Gray said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We started to hear a growing interest from plan sponsors, organically, how could Bitcoin or how could digital assets be offered in a retirement plan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company said <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/microstrategy\/\">MicroStrategy<\/a>\u00a0has agreed to join the plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per the report, Fidelity is planning to make the investment option available by mid-2022, with a 20% maximum investment ceiling that the employer would determine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm also plans to charge less than 1% of the assets in the account as a fee. In addition, it intends to introduce a \u201ccompetitively priced\u201d trading fee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this offering, Fidelity continues to integrate crypto into its core business. It already has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/not-waiting-around-for-the-sec-fidelity-will-launch-a-spot-bitcoin-etf-in-canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin ETF trading in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has made several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/not-waiting-around-for-the-sec-fidelity-will-launch-a-spot-bitcoin-etf-in-canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-crypto moves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>US Labor Department's view on crypto<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of Labor has not banned crypto investment from pension plans for now. However, the department <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/ebsa\/ebsa20220310\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its reluctance to approve digital assets as a retirement investment plan in a compliance document published in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the document reads:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These investments present significant risks and challenges to participants\u2019 retirement accounts, including significant risks of fraud, theft, and loss.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reluctance, coupled with the growth of traditional investment firms offering crypto exposures to their clients, made Fidelity Investment write to the agency about the need for guidance to help the space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pension funds and crypto<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d7f1000b-1022-4bac-bb88-a112f0c1c263\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged last year that Australia's fifth-largest pension fund, Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), was looking to invest in the crypto space, especially as the industry sees more maturity and regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, U.S.-based pension funds Fairfax County Police Officers Retirement System and Fairfax County Employees' Retirement System have also shown interest in investing in crypto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most pension funds are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-19\/-too-risky-2-4-trillion-pension-sector-remains-wary-of-crypto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of crypto investments because of the high level of risk and volatile nature of cryptocurrencies.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S.-based Fidelity Investments \u2014 the largest provider of pension plans in the country \u2014 plans to offer its clients the option to put their retirement funds in Bitcoin (BTC), according to a report from The New York Times.
