{"id":233763,"date":"2022-04-22T16:00:32","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T15:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=233763"},"modified":"2022-04-22T13:51:40","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T12:51:40","slug":"hacker-self-destructs-1m-loot-gained-from-defi-exploit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/hacker-self-destructs-1m-loot-gained-from-defi-exploit\/","title":{"rendered":"Hacker &#8216;self-destructs&#8217; $1M loot gained from DeFi exploit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is rare for thieves to leave their loot behind when escaping, but a hacker did precisely that after stealing more than $1 million from DeFi protocol Zeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hacker exploited a vulnerability in the DeFi project to steal over $1 million and then locked it in a self-destruct contract, making it impossible for anyone to retrieve the stolen funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Zeed loses $1M<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain security firm, BlockSec first detected the attack on the Zeed protocol and shared it around 8 PM UTC on April 21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ What if rewards can be tripled?<\/p>\n<p>Our system detected an attack transaction(<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xk8Tet2o0Q\">https:\/\/t.co\/xk8Tet2o0Q<\/a>) that exploited the reward distribution vulnerability in ZEED on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BSC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BSC<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zeedcommunity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@zeedcommunity<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/defiprime?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@defiprime<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; BlockSec (@BlockSecTeam) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlockSecTeam\/status\/1517052623354232832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hacker took advantage of the reward distribution mechanism on the DeFi lending protocol, which describes itself as a \u201cdecentralized financial integrated ecosystem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vulnerability allowed the hacker to mint extra tokens and sell them, thereby crashing the price of the token to zero and netting around $1 million from the theft.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233764\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-233764 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/D68CB653-DCCE-4A38-B75D-A7F5538DD85F.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1060\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/D68CB653-DCCE-4A38-B75D-A7F5538DD85F.jpeg 1060w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/D68CB653-DCCE-4A38-B75D-A7F5538DD85F-300x101.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/D68CB653-DCCE-4A38-B75D-A7F5538DD85F-1024x346.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/D68CB653-DCCE-4A38-B75D-A7F5538DD85F-768x259.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1060px) 100vw, 1060px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Peckshield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The hacker then sent the stolen crypto to an \u201cattack contract\u201d \u2014 a smart contract capable of executing the found exploit quickly and automatically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a reason known only to the hacker, the attack contract was to self-destruct before he moved the stolen funds. Since the contract is irreversible, it is impossible to recover the funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A blockchain scanner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bscscan.com\/address\/0x05e55d051ac0a5fb744e71704a8fa4ee3b103374#tokentxns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the attack contract contained $1,041,237.57 worth of BSC-USD. Its successful destruction happened at 7:15 AM UTC on April 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As of press time, the Zeed protocol has yet to release a comment or update about the hack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prevalence of exploits and hacks in crypto continues to be a source of concern as hackers steadily improve their methods. In the first quarter of the year alone, over $1 billion worth of funds were stolen, including more than $600 million <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/axie-infinity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Axie Infinity<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/axie-infinity-ronin-bridge-hacker-has-already-moved-38293-eth-114-8-million\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users appear to be at the receiving end of these thefts since not every project offers refunds.
