{"id":232714,"date":"2022-04-18T12:20:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T11:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=232714"},"modified":"2022-04-18T12:06:42","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T11:06:42","slug":"defi-protocol-beanstalk-loses-180m-in-exploit-hacker-gains-80m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/defi-protocol-beanstalk-loses-180m-in-exploit-hacker-gains-80m\/","title":{"rendered":"DeFi protocol Beanstalk loses $180M in exploit, hacker gains $80M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeFi protocol Beanstalk Farms lost over $180 million to malicious players due to an exploit on April 17 that allowed a hacker to pass a governance proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-based <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cryptos\/stablecoin\/\">stablecoin<\/a> protocol's exploit left several tokens missing and saw its U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/why-some-people-are-saying-waves-is-a-ponzi-scheme\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drop below the $1 mark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Beanstalk suffered an exploit today. <\/p>\n<p>The Beanstalk Farms team is investigating the attack and will make an announcement to the community as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Beanstalk Farms (@BeanstalkFarms) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BeanstalkFarms\/status\/1515700678454390785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>Beans protocol exploited<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain security company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peckshield\/status\/1515680335769456640?s=21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PeckShield<\/span><\/a> first reported the hack on Twitter and said a<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hacker stole more than $80 million by exploiting Beanstalk Farms.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BeanstalkFarms?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BeanstalkFarms<\/a> was exploited in a flurry of txs (<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PMsdP5dnJG\">https:\/\/t.co\/PMsdP5dnJG<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wyHe3ARZgU\">https:\/\/t.co\/wyHe3ARZgU<\/a>),<br \/>leading to the gain of  $80+M for the hacker (The protocol loss may be larger), including 24,830 ETH and 36M BEAN.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PeckShield Inc. (@peckshield) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peckshield\/status\/1515680335769456640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hacker used flash loans to obtain a large amount of Beanstalk STALK tokens, which gave them enough voting power to pass a governance proposal that drained all the funds on the protocol into the hacker's wallet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hacker then paid back the flash loans from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/aave\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/uniswap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uniswap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> V2, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/sushiswap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sushiswap<\/span><\/a> and converted the funds to Wrapped ETH. The stolen funds were then sent through the Tornado Cash mixer. The hacker also donated some of his stolen crypto to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">4\/ The initial funds to launch the hack are withdrawn from  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SynapseProtocol?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SynapseProtocol<\/a> and most of the result gains are deposited to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TornadoCash?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TornadoCash<\/a>. Currently 15,154 ETH still stays in the hacker\u2019s account. According to the attack summary posted on the Beanstalk Discord server, the exploit happened because Beanstalk failed to:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cuse a flash loan resistant measure to determine the % of Stalk that had voted in favor of the BIP.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/5<\/p>\n<p>The new popular <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BeanstalkFarms?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@beanstalkfarms<\/a> protocol lost $181M+ in today\u2019s exploit, but the attacker only gained $76M.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s figure out what happened\ud83d\udc47 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sRjzAF8stE\">pic.twitter.com\/sRjzAF8stE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Igor Igamberdiev (@FrankResearcher) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FrankResearcher\/status\/1515693895887294466?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blockchain Security firm responsible for auditing Beanstalk smart contracts, Omnicia, said Beanstalk launched the code with the flash loan vulnerability after its audit. It added in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@omniscia.io\/beanstalk-farms-post-mortem-analysis-a0667ee0ca9d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postmortem analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the attack that it had not yet audited the exploited code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the prevalence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pancake-bunny-token-plummets-by-90-after-40-million-flash-loan-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flash loans exploits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the DeFi space, it\u2019s surprising that Beanstalk introduced the code without proper auditing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, there are concerns about whether the protocol will reimburse users. Beanstalk Farms said it will provide more updates at its next town hall meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hack comes only a few weeks after a Ronin bridge exploit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ronin-hacker-moved-2000-eth-to-the-tornado-cash-tumbler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $600 million on Axie Infinity in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Tornado Cash's use by hackers has given rise to criticism for its lack of effort in preventing fraud.
