As of April 14, the wallet held around 148,000 ETH.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">THREAD: Updates to OFAC\u2019s SDN designation for Lazarus Group confirm that the North Korean cybercriminal group was behind the March hack of Ronin Bridge, in which over $600 million worth of ETH and USDC was stolen.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Chainalysis (@chainalysis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chainalysis\/status\/1514645221027594245?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto analytics firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/chainalysis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chainalysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed that the wallet received a substantial part of the stolen funds, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/elliptic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elliptic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/blog\/540-million-stolen-from-the-ronin-defi-bridge?utm_campaign=Ronin%20hack&utm_content=204725261&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&hss_channel=tw-1344645140\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that around 14% of the amount <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ronin-hacker-moved-2000-eth-to-the-tornado-cash-tumbler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been laundered<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who is the Lazarus Group?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lazarus group is a North Korean state-backed cybercrime unit that has been involved in several high-profile crypto heists in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazarus first came into the limelight in 2018 for stealing over $200 million in crypto from Gate.io and has continued to gain notoriety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the group was also involved in stealing around $300 million worth of digital assets stolen from KuCoin, a Singapore-based crypto exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazarus has<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/report-north-koreas-lazarus-group-becoming-more-sophisticated\/\"> begun<\/a> to \u201cdeploy high-level techniques to steal and launder crypto profited from various cybercrime attacks\u201d and is suspected to be backed by the DPRK government. A recent report revealed that parts of the Lazarus group have been using hacks to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finance North Korea\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0missile programs.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Ronin Network doing about the hack?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronin Network said in a blog that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is <a href=\"https:\/\/roninblockchain.substack.com\/p\/community-alert-ronin-validators?s=w\">adding<\/a> more security measures to the Ronin bridge to reduce the risk of a future occurrence and expects to redeploy the bridge by the end of the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronin network is an Ethereum side chain that hosts the Axie Infinity play-to-earn the game. The developer of the game, Sky Mavis, uses it because it offers a better scalability option, which is a requirement for a platform like Axie Infinity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Axie Infinity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/axie-infinity-devs-raise-150m-to-compensate-users-for-ronin-network-hack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $150 million from its investors to refund affected users. While the Ronin bridge isn\u2019t back up yet, users can now withdraw via Binance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>CryptoSlate<\/em> recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/axie-infinity-has-been-losing-gamers-before-hack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the platform lost a considerable number of its users even before the hack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What the US sanction means for the wallet<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the U.S. blacklisting the wallet that holds a substantial part of the funds, the group would have a much more difficult time converting the stolen funds into fiat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hacker has to use a centralized exchange to convert the stolen funds because it requires significant liquidity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson for the Treasury said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Identification of the wallet will make clear to other VC actors that by transacting with it, they risk exposure to U.S. sanctions.
