{"id":231053,"date":"2022-04-09T03:20:24","date_gmt":"2022-04-09T02:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=231053"},"modified":"2025-04-10T18:41:59","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T17:41:59","slug":"block-blockstream-and-tesla-collaborate-for-green-bitcoin-mining-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/block-blockstream-and-tesla-collaborate-for-green-bitcoin-mining-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Block, Blockstream and Tesla collaborate for green Bitcoin mining facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockstream and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Block<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formerly known as Square, have announced plans to start mining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Texas using solar-powered technology created by Tesla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.blockstream.com\/blockstream-and-block-inc-s-solar-mining-facility-now-powered-by-tesla-solar-pv-and-megapack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued by the firms, the Bitcoin mining facility is expected to be completed before the end of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/amp\/2022\/04\/08\/tesla-block-blockstream-to-mine-bitcoin-off-solar-power-in-texas.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the co-founder of Blockstream, Adam Back, said the facility would be built to prove that Bitcoin mining can be carried out on a large scale with renewable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that the facility would have a dashboard that would allow people to monitor the real-time performance of the project. Members of the public would be able to watch the power output and the total number of bitcoin mined using the facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This recent development results from the collaboration Blockstream and Block entered into in June 2021. Then, both parties revealed their intentions to create a mining facility situated in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The facility features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The said facility would be powered by 3.8-megawatt Solar panels and 12 megawatt-hour Megapack to be provided by Tesla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement explicitly stated that \u201cthe combination of Tesla photovoltaics and Megapack battery equipment will drive the 30 Petahashes per second of mining hardware at the facility with 100% solar energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bitcoin mining goes green<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin miners are increasingly using renewable energy sources to mine the digital asset, thereby helping to cancel the notion that the process is causing more harm to the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moves by a throng of this firm corroborate an earlier <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/46-bitcoin-miners-employ-renewable-energy-sources-to-mine-bitcoin-bmc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the percentage of the global Bitcoin mining industry deploying renewable resources to mine Bitcoin has increased from 1% to a notable 58.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Will this spur Tesla to accept Bitcoin again?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular electric car maker, Tesla, made the crypto airwaves last year when it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tesla-btc-holding-is-now-worth-2-billion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it was purchasing $1.5 billion worth of the digital asset. Not only that, the company went on to temporarily accept the flagship asset as a payment method for its vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that move was short-lived as the company cited the environmental concerns as to why it had to discontinue accepting Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with the firm now partnering with other pro-crypto firms to mine Bitcoin with renewable energy, this might spur the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/elon-musk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-led company to accept the asset again.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blockstream and Block, formerly known as Square, have announced plans to start mining Bitcoin in Texas using solar-powered technology created by Tesla.
