{"id":230516,"date":"2022-04-07T13:30:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T12:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=230516"},"modified":"2022-04-07T15:02:05","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T14:02:05","slug":"sveriges-riksbank-says-it-will-be-possible-to-integrate-e-krona-into-banking-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sveriges-riksbank-says-it-will-be-possible-to-integrate-e-krona-into-banking-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Swedish central bank says it will be possible to integrate e-krona into banking systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden\u2019s central bank, said its second phase of testing CBDCs has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riksbank.se\/en-gb\/press-and-published\/notices-and-press-releases\/notices\/2022\/new-report-from-the-e-krona-pilot-project\/\">proven<\/a> that it would be possible to integrate a state-backed digital currency into the current banking system.<\/p>\n<p>The integration would enable the banks\u2019 clients to exchange funds in their bank accounts into e-krona and vice-versa.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank began the second phase of testing its CBDC project dubbed &#8220;e-krona&#8221; in February. This trial phase sought to investigate and test technical solutions developed within the project. Additionally, the central bank sought to investigate a potential legal framework around e-krona.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the experimenting and testing phase went, Riksbank aimed to test whether e-krona might function offline, assess the adequacy of the offline solution, and determine how to integrate banks and other payment service providers into the e-krona network. For the last part of the trials, Riksbank teamed up with Handelsbanken and Tietoevry.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, these tests determine that it would be possible to transact through e-krona offline. However, offline transactions come with risks that the central bank would need to manage should it decide to embrace a similar solution.<\/p>\n<p>After investigating legal questions regarding the status of a potential e-krona, Riksbank concluded that it could be deemed an electric form of cash.<\/p>\n<h2>Sweden inches closer to rolling out digital currency<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the above developments, Riksbank said the pilot project only seeks to increase its knowledge of how to design a functional e-krona. To this end, the central bank asserted that it has not decided whether to issue e-krona or the technical solution and legal framework it would run on.<\/p>\n<p>The e-krona pilot project is now entering the third phase, which will focus on investigating the requirements of a future e-krona, among other issues. With these steps, Sweden is getting closer to launching its CBDC.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/cbdctracker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBDCTracker<\/a>, only two countries have launched CBDCs thus far. These are Nigeria and the Bahamas. At the moment, China's central bank remains closest to launching its CBDC, e-CNY, after conducting numerous trials in major cities last year.<\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Bank of China (PBoC) continues pushing ahead with its plans to issue e-CNY at full speed. Earlier this year, the central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/china-enters-2022-with-a-first-mover-advantage-on-the-cbdc-front-releases-pilot-versions-of-digital-yuan-wallet-apps-for-android-ios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rolled out<\/a> pilot versions of e-CYN wallets for iOS and Android platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this progress, PBoC has not yet announced when it intends to launch e-CNY.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden\u2019s central bank, said its second phase of testing CBDCs has proven that it would be possible to integrate a state-backed digital currency into the current banking system.
