This is part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by using non-carbon emitting sources of energy for its operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Marathon Digital eyes sustainable energy sources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CEO, Fred Thiel, the company is dedicated to ensuring that it employs sustainable mining practices as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWith the majority of our fleet already scheduled to be deployed at renewable power facilities and deployments currently underway, we believe it is an appropriate time to transition our legacy operations away from fossil fuel generation and towards more sustainable sources of power,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beowulf hosts the Hardin mining facility and owns the coal power plants powering them. According to Marathon, it plans to transition to a carbon-neutral energy source by this year\u2019s third quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the company did not provide information about where it\u2019s planning to relocate or the kind of energy it will adopt, Thiel did state that its mining strategy is to deploy rigs close to sustainable energy producers, so they don\u2019t have to be on the grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company has previously stated that it will deploy 199,000 Bitcoin miners in 2023 as part of its goal to reach 23.3 exahash per second (EH\/s).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also said that it intends to deploy 100,000 miners in Texas that will be powered mostly by solar and wind farms. Marathon has also pledged that all its operations will be carbon-neutral by the end of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Green energy comes to fore for Bitcoin mining<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to transition comes at a time when Bitcoin miners are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/oil-giant-exxon-mobil-uses-bitcoin-to-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opting for sustainable energy practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a direct result of the increased scrutiny from government and environmental organizations about the impact of mining practices on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stakeholders in Europe have also urged the governments in the region to ban blockchains dependent on the proof of work consensus mechanism. However, the European Union <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/eu-votes-against-a-de-facto-ban-on-bitcoins-pow-consensus-method-in-mica-draft\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that in its crypto regulatory framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report included crypto mining as a source of carbon emissions.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before then, Greenpeace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/change-the-code-and-the-insane-push-to-make-bitcoin-a-centralized-proof-of-stake-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a campaign \u201cchange the code, not the climate,\u201d which aimed to reduce Bitcoin energy impacts by transitioning to a more energy-efficient consensus model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-community-attacks-greenpeace-bitcoin-demands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this campaign, Bitcoin advocates still recognize the need for more energy efficiency.
