{"id":229867,"date":"2022-04-05T13:00:13","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T12:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=229867"},"modified":"2022-04-05T12:25:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T11:25:52","slug":"german-authorities-shut-down-worlds-largest-darknet-market-hydra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/german-authorities-shut-down-worlds-largest-darknet-market-hydra\/","title":{"rendered":"German authorities shut down world&#8217;s largest darknet market Hydra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany\u2019s Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) have successfully seized the server infrastructure of the world's largest illegal darknet marketplace Hydra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bka.de\/DE\/Presse\/Listenseite_Pressemitteilungen\/2022\/Presse2022\/220405_PM_IllegalerDarknetMarktplatz.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the BKA today, the law enforcement agencies have also confiscated approximately \u20ac23 million worth of Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAmong other things, there is a suspicion of the commercial operation of criminal trading platforms on the Internet, the commercial procurement or granting of an opportunity for the unauthorized purchase or the unauthorized sale of narcotics as well as commercial money laundering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What is Hydra?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched around 2015, Hydra was hitherto the most prominent Russian darknet market and \u201clikely the largest darknet market in the world\u201d\u2014despite operating mostly in CIS countries, according to crypto intelligence firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ciphertrace.com\/hydra-russias-largest-dark-market\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciphertrace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Namely, the marketplace served customers in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Moldova. In total, around 17 million customers and over 19,000 seller accounts were registered on the marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hydra ran out of heads<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, trades on Hydra \u2014 the lion\u2019s share of which reportedly involved illegal narcotics \u2014 were condu\u0441ted using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, the BKA pointed out, adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAccording to ZIT and BKA estimates, \u2018Hydra Market\u2019 was probably the illegal marketplace with the highest turnover worldwide. Its sales amounted to at least 1.23 billion euros in 2020 alone. In particular, the Bitcoin Bank Mixer, a service for obfuscating digital transactions provided by the platform, made crypto investigations extremely difficult for law enforcement agencies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_229868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-229868\" style=\"width: 933px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-229868 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/hydra-darknet-market.png\" alt=\"The notification place on Hydra's website following the shutdown. Image: Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following Hydra\u2019s closure, a special banner was placed by the agencies on its website, notifying users that \u201cthe platform and the criminal content have been seized by the Federal Criminal Police Office on behalf of Attorney General's Office in Frankfurt am Main in the course of an international coordinated law enforcement operation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, despite being of Russian origin, Hydra <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/confirmed-russians-do-not-evade-sanctions-using-crypto-chainalysis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wasn\u2019t actually used to evade the western sanctions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that followed the country\u2019s armed conflict with Ukraine, according to blockchain data platform Chainalysis.
