This time, the gains seem to be inspired by the news, first reported by The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, that early Facebook investor, Peter Thiel, invested millions of dollars in the digital currency.<\/p>\n

Thiel is the co-founder of Founders Fund<\/a>, a venture capital firm that makes investments in tech startups. It\u2019s most famous for its early stake in Facebook<\/a>. Today we learned that Founders Fund<\/a> purchased \u201c$15 million to $20 million,\u201d Bitcoin, \u00a0according to the Journal\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

The support has sparked Bitcoin\u2019s ascension today. With relatively tepid growth since the middle of December, Bitcoin<\/a> surpassed $15,000 for the first time since December 27th<\/sup> and just the second time since December 20th<\/sup>, based on current charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin is up almost 10%<\/strong> over the past 24 hours.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Although Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are prone to dips in value, December\u2019s short lag began with a market downturn just before Christmas and, spurred on by fears of South Korean government regulation<\/a>, continued through the New Year\u2019s holiday.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s gains were a welcome sign from Bitcoin<\/a> enthusiasts who have seen its market share decrease<\/a> from almost 80% at the start of 2017 to only 36% today.<\/p>\n

Thiel\u2019s Unique Contribution<\/h2>\n

Thiel is one of the only mainstream investors to admit to investing large amounts of money in digital currencies. As the journal writes, they are often \u201cscared off by concerns about cybersecurity and liquidity, as well as more mundane fears of investment losses.\u201d<\/p>\n

The co-founder of PayPal<\/a>, Thiel hasn\u2019t been afraid to speak his mind. He\u2019s a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump<\/a>. Moreover, Founders Fund<\/a> extends throughout the tech space. In addition to their investment in Facebook, Founders Fund is represented at Airbnb, SpaceX, and Lyft.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin<\/a> isn\u2019t their only crypto-focused investment. The Journal reports that their investments include two crypto-focused hedge funds, Metastable Capital and Polychain Capital. Both funds invest money in blockchain companies, another lucrative expression of the cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n

The Next Move<\/h2>\n

Neither The Wall Street Journal nor CNBC, who both reported on Thiel\u2019s investment, were able to determine if he sold any of his stake in Bitcoin<\/a>. However, at the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabia, Thiel expressed his confidence<\/a> in Bitcoin, saying,<\/p>\n

\u201cIf bitcoin ends up being the cyber equivalent of gold it has a great potential left.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For new Bitcoin enthusiasts, Thiel\u2019s investment and Bitcoin\u2019s subsequent price increase are welcome news. 2017 was nearly unencumbered positivity for Bitcoin<\/a> and its investors.
