The comprehensive proposal touches on almost every aspect of the crypto industry.<\/p>\n<h2>Senator Bragg calls for laws to protect crypto customers<\/h2>\n<p>At the conference, Senator Bragg stated that the proposed legislation seeks to \u201cprotect [crypto] consumers against malicious operators.\u201d It will reform crypto market licensing, debanking, taxing, decentralized autonomous organizations, and custody.<\/p>\n<p>The senator also added that such laws would offer guidance for the crypto industry and show Australia\u2019s willingness to play a more prominent role. The wide scope of the proposed legislation suggests that stakeholders in Australia are not leaving anything to chance.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto industry has been developing rapidly, making it difficult for regulators to keep up. But Braggs believes authorities must take these developments seriously. He specifically mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/what-can-we-learn-from-studying-hacks-revealing-insights-on-privacy-and-cryptocurrency-movements-after-the-dao-2016-hack\/\">DAOs<\/a> which have become more popular recently.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, DAOs pose \u201can existential threat to the tax base\u201d with the current rules. By this, he refers to the dependence of Australia on company income tax even though DAOs aren\u2019t taxed like regular companies. This makes it possible for companies in the country to avoid tax by simply becoming DAOs instead.<\/p>\n<h2>Australia\u2019s parliament also wants more regulation<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s not only Bragg that sees the need for crypto regulations in the country. The country\u2019s parliament is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/About_Parliament\/Parliamentary_Departments\/Parliamentary_Library\/pubs\/rp\/BudgetReview202021\/AustralianGovernmentRevenue\">considering<\/a> this and plans to release documents regarding the regulations soon. It\u2019s also planning to consult with the crypto industry on the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The treasury is also considering whether to compel crypto exchanges to hold Australian investments onshore. This is expected to further <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/facebook-sued-in-australia-for-fake-crypto-ads\">protect investors<\/a> and reduce the likelihood of exchanges disappearing with consumer funds.<\/p>\n<p>The Council of Financial Regulators is also reviewing the de-banking of crypto business by major banks in the country. Allowing major banks in the country to facilitate crypto transactions will significantly affect the development of the industry within the country.<\/p>\n<p>All these new developments don\u2019t come as a surprise, given that the authorities have been working on these reforms for months. In December, Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced measures that\u2019ll reform the payment sector in the country.
