Orbis (@orbisproject) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/orbisproject\/status\/1496928538536329217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Cardano\u2019s dapp ecosystem and user base expands, the number of transactions that can be processed at any given moment is bound to scale\u2013otherwise congestion issues will hinder the network\u2019s growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZK Rollups are Layer 2 solutions for increased scalability that, in short, bundle, or \u201croll-up,\u201d a batch of transactions into a single \u201czero knowledge\u201d proof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Orbis, like with other ZK Rollups out there, each batch generates a cryptographic proof, a so-called ZK-SNARK that is submitted on-chain to the Layer 1 and verified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZK-SNARKs stored on mainnet essentially prove that \u201cfor some set of inputs and some set of outputs, there exists a set of transactions which were signed by the relevant parties and which followed the rules of the relevant smart contracts,\u201d explained the blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, Orbis could drastically increase Cardano\u2019s transaction throughput, since the mainnet only records the inputs, the outputs, and the proof that those outputs resulted from the inputs in accordance to blockchain\u2019s rules, the team behind the protocol explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Roadmap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orbis features two main components\u2013the off-chain system, or \u2018Prover,\u2019 and the co-called \u2018Verifier,\u2019 which is essentially an on-chain smart contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Prover will construct ZK-SNARK proofs, Verifier will settle transactions on Cardano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its initial release, Orbis will launch with a single Prover operated by Orbis Labs, however, it is intended to transition into a fully decentralized, distributed stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the blog, \u201cfull decentralization of the prover means that there is no computer, individual or trusted entity which is a single point of failure,\u201d and constitutes an \u201ceventual goal and commitment of the project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Orbis will allow PlutusTx smart contracts to be easily ported over, and in addition, support new programming languages\u2013Pluto and Plutarch\u2013alternatives for writing on-chain scripts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both programming languages \u201coptimize for efficient on-chain deployment by using zero-cost abstractions over Plutus Core.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By being built using the Halo 2 ZK proving system developed by Electric Coin Co.\u2013Zcash\u2013Orbis supports recursive proofs, essentially allowing the development of application specific rollups for specific use cases such as DeFi, NFTs, supply chains and micropayments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe expect the general user and developer community on Cardano to find a familiar environment on the Orbis Layer 2 with more niche applications building their own bespoke rollup solutions which remain composable with other rollups and the underlying layer 2 Orbis,\u201d concluded the blog, predicting a thriving and interoperable DeFi ecosystem built on Orbis.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The official blog post by the team behind Cardano\u2019s first ZK Rollup dubbed \u2018Orbis\u2019 revealed how the solution will allow the network to tackle those scaling problems Hydra won\u2019t be able to solve.
