{"id":221244,"date":"2022-02-24T03:00:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T03:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=221244"},"modified":"2022-03-22T22:29:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T22:29:23","slug":"recent-phishing-attack-drops-opensea-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/recent-phishing-attack-drops-opensea-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent \u201cphishing attack\u201d drops OpenSea numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities on OpenSea have dropped considerably on the back of the recent phishing attack that saw its users lose around $3 million worth of their NFTs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>OpenSea trading activities down<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to available data from DappRadar, trading activities dropped by 37% to around $660 million, while the number of traders on the largest NFT marketplace also dropped by close to 20% to just a little above 220,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This appears to be the effect of the recent heist on the platform. Per our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/opensea-phishing-attack-heres-what-happened\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the attacker successfully mimicked an OpenSea email urging its users to move their NFTs to a new smart contract; however, the attacker\u2019s email smart contract tricked the original holders into selling their digital token for zero <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a> to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick situation report revealed that no fewer than 17 users were victims of the hack, with a loss valued at $1.7 million. However, independent researchers estimate that the figure could be between $2 million and $3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the said victims who lost a Bored Ape, Timothy McKimmy, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/user-sues-opensea-for-1m-after-losing-his-bored-ape-nft-in-phishing-attack\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a lawsuit against OpenSea accusing the firm of \u201cnegligence\u201d and wants the court to order the firm to reimburse him \u201cthe valuation of the Bored Ape, and\/or monetary damages over $1,000,000.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u2026Disagrees with data from DappRadar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A statement from OpenSea, however, shows that they do not agree with the figures from DappRadar. According to the crypto firm, \u201cmore accurate and complete data are on Dune Analytics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A look at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dune.xyz\/sealaunch\/NFT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Dune Analytics would show that the recent attacks have had little to no effect on the trades and user activities on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LooksRare, a rival NFT platform launched in early January, is possibly one of the new places OpenSea users decamped to.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, DappRadar data from the last seven days showed that the platform\u00a0<\/span>also saw its trading volume drop by 65%, while BloctoBay, a relatively new marketplace built on Flow blockchain, saw its trading activities rise by 215%.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Mintable recovers three stolen Azuki NFTs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another development, Mintable, a new NFT marketplace, has revealed that it has recovered 3 NFTs that were part of those stolen in the recent OpenSea attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a press <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2022\/02\/23\/2390008\/0\/en\/UPDATE-Mintable-Recovers-NFTs-Stolen-in-OpenSea-Exploit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued by the marketplace, the NFTs were found on LooksRare, a platform it describes as an abode for \u201cwash trading and stolen NFTs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mintable went on to state that it was purchasing NFTs to sell on its platform before coming \u201cacross (the) listings for the stolen NFTs and bought Azuki #1178, #4176, and #1180 for about 13.35 (ETH) each and would like to return them to their previous holders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Activities on OpenSea have dropped considerably on the back of the recent phishing attack that saw its users lose around $3 million worth of their NFTs.
