{"id":219885,"date":"2022-02-14T20:00:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T20:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=219885"},"modified":"2022-02-15T09:39:59","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T09:39:59","slug":"singapores-dbs-looks-to-bring-crypto-to-the-masses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/singapores-dbs-looks-to-bring-crypto-to-the-masses\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore\u2019s DBS looks to bring crypto to the masses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore\u2019s largest bank by assets, DBS, intends to begin offering digital asset trading to its retail clients by the end of 2022, CEO Piyush Gupta said during the lender\u2019s annual earnings <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbs.com\/iwov-resources\/images\/investors\/quarterly-financials\/2021\/4Q21%20media%20briefing.mp4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">webcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on February 14th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gupta said during the earnings call that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbs.com\/iwov-resources\/images\/investors\/quarterly-financials\/2021\/4Q21%20media%20briefing.mp4\">DBS<\/a> has already begun working on how it can bring the digital trading service to its retail client base \u201cin a sensible way,\u201d however, the lender\u2019s focus for the first three quarters of 2022 will be to improve access for its credit investor base.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst order of day is to make it [digital asset trading] all online, make it self-service [and] make it instant\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the credit investor base, Gupta said, adding that despite the service being live 24\/7 clients had to call bankers by phone to place crypto-related orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>DDEx<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Singaporean lender, which boasts roughly $500 billion in assets under management, has been involved in digital assets for a number of years now, having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbs.com\/newsroom\/dbs_digital_exchange\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its members-only DBS Digital Exchange, or DDEx, in December 2020 which allows trading across multiple fiat currencies and frequently traded cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum (Ether) for institutional clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DBS was one of the first traditional financial institutions to offer a full suite of services when it comes to digital assets and plans to continue trailblazing with its plan to offer retail clients a convenient way to access its digital assets trading desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lender said in November 2021, that the digital exchange\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbs.com\/newsroom\/DBS_Digital_Exchange_sees_growing_business_momentum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading volume grew 40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first eight months of the year since its launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rising adoption among financial institutions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like DBS, many traditional financial institutions have begun to foray into crypto. Most recently, accounting firm KPMG Canada added <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/accounting-giant-kpmg-adds-bitcoin-and-ether-to-its-balance-sheet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crypto to its balance sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, announcing that it has added an undisclosed amount of Bitcoin and Ether through Gemini Trust Company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in the U.S., banking giant Morgan Stanley has been offering its wealthier clients access to crypto-related investments since 2021. Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs has also been offering its wealthiest clients access to bitcoin and other digital assets. An analyst at the lender said in January that Bitcoin will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/goldman-sachs-says-bitcoin-will-compete-with-gold-store-value-2022-01-05\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compete with gold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a \u201cstore of value\u201d and take away market share from the precious metal as adoption becomes more widespread, according to a Reuters report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European banks are ahead of the curve when it comes to crypto-related services, with most large banks giving clients direct access to purchase and invest in crypto via their bank accounts. Europe is considered the world\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chainalysis.com\/reports\/central-northern-western-europe-cryptocurrency-geography-report-2021-preview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest crypto market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Chainalysis research.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Singapore\u2019s largest bank by assets, DBS, intends to begin offering digital asset trading to its retail clients by the end of 2022, CEO Piyush Gupta said during the lender\u2019s annual earnings webcast on February 14th.
