{"id":213471,"date":"2022-01-29T00:00:50","date_gmt":"2022-01-29T00:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=213471"},"modified":"2022-01-28T20:48:07","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T20:48:07","slug":"defi-protocol-qubit-finance-exploited-for-80-million-in-a-recent-hack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/defi-protocol-qubit-finance-exploited-for-80-million-in-a-recent-hack\/","title":{"rendered":"DeFi protocol Qubit Finance exploited for $80 million in a recent hack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing $80 million worth of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bnb\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BNB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tokens in a recent hack, Qubit Finance joined the unfortunate list of exploited DeFi protocols on Binance Smart Chain (BSC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DeFi lending protocol reported the incident in a Twitter post, revealing that the malicious attacker exploited a vulnerability on the Qubit Bridge\u2013a cross-chain bridge to Ethereum.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What happened?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Qubit team flagged the hacker\u2019s address and published a detailed report which includes an analysis of the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Protocol Exploit Report<br \/>This report includes an analysis of the attack in its entirety in order to ascertain the nature of the exploit and, to prevent any similar exploits in the future.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0152W0X553\">https:\/\/t.co\/0152W0X553<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Qubit Finance (@QubitFin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QubitFin\/status\/1486965562903531522?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QBridge enables users to deposit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/weth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WETH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Ethereum mainnet to Qubit\u2019s BSC-based smart contract, and mint xETH that can be used as collateral to borrow on BSC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the attacker exploited the vulnerability and managed to mint unlimited xETH\u2013without depositing WETH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the minted xETH as collateral, the attacker drained 206,809 BNB from the lending protocol, worth roughly $80 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Qubit team is continuing to monitor the affected assets, which, at the time of writing, haven\u2019t moved from the flagged address.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Qubit attempts to contact the attacker<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exploited protocol also made attempts to contact the attacker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an on-chain message, the team offered a bounty of $250.000 in return for the stolen assets\u2013the maximum amount set by Qubit's ongoing bug bounty program.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">[Our message to the exploiter]<br \/>The team is glad to have a conversation with you.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4SxtuD6pQY\">https:\/\/t.co\/4SxtuD6pQY<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/V9bICKvWda\">pic.twitter.com\/V9bICKvWda<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Qubit Finance (@QubitFin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QubitFin\/status\/1486970878785363977?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe pursue you to negotiate directly with us before taking any further action. The exploit and loss of funds have a profound effect on thousands of real people,\u201d wrote the protocol on Twitter\u2013urging the attacker to cooperate.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the maximum bounty offer is not what you are looking for, we are open to having a conversation.
