{"id":207911,"date":"2021-12-14T08:15:48","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T08:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=207911"},"modified":"2021-12-13T19:36:37","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T19:36:37","slug":"german-banking-group-sparkasse-confirms-rumours-wants-to-launch-a-crypto-wallet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/german-banking-group-sparkasse-confirms-rumours-wants-to-launch-a-crypto-wallet\/","title":{"rendered":"German banking group &#8220;Sparkasse&#8221; confirms rumours\u2013wants to launch a crypto wallet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sparkasse\u2019s secret project was confirmed\u2013the network of 370 savings banks across Germany is planning to give 50 million people exposure to crypto.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s leading banking group is working on enabling customers access to crypto\u2013directly from their current banking account, \u200b\u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/finanz-szene.de\/digital-banking\/bitcoin-via-girokonto-sparkassen-arbeiten-an-krypto-wallet\/\"><i>Finanz Szene<\/i><\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<h2>Sparkasse\u2019s crypto wallet project revealed<\/h2>\n<p>According to the report, Spakasse\u2019s crypto wallet would enable customers to access <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> and other cryptocurrencies\u2013without having to use one of the big crypto exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>This would lower the barriers for Sparkasse customers, who wouldn\u2019t need to go through additional authentication processes in order to use the crypto wallet feature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interest in cryptocurrencies is enormous, the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe also sees it,\u201d said Alexander Hartberg, spokesman for the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/wirtschaft\/geheimes-pilotprojekt-bitcoin-bald-auch-bei-der-sparkasse\/27888814.html\">confirmed<\/a> the pilot project.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hartberg, an in-house subcontractor that specializes in payment solutions within the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, S-Payment, is in charge of the project \u201ccarried out to determine which possibilities and risks a wallet, in which Sparkasse customers can safely store cryptocurrencies, offers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project team prepares decisions in the committees of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe in the first half of 2022,\u201d added Hartberg, noting that the project is yet to be greenlighted.<\/p>\n<h2>Could the wallet launch in 2022?<\/h2>\n<p>The service could be launched in the coming year, but before that, individual bank committees have to reach their decisions\u2013after all, the 370 branches in the group function as independent banks.<\/p>\n<p>Several technical details remain to be clarified\u2013for example, does S-Payment or another Sparkasse player apply for a crypto custody license from Germany\u2019s financial regulatory authority\u2013Bafin?<\/p>\n<p>Whether the savings banks will take the custody into their own hands or commission an external service provider to do so, remains to be revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The previously secret project would be the first of its kind in the European banking landscape and due to the banking group\u2019s large user-base, its impact could be enormous.<\/p>\n<p>Similar projects from other major financial institutions in Germany, such as Commerzbank or Deutsche Bank are not known.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sparkasse\u2019s secret project was confirmed\u2013the network of 370 savings banks across Germany is planning to give 50 million people exposure to crypto.
