{"id":207786,"date":"2021-12-13T11:47:58","date_gmt":"2021-12-13T11:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=207786"},"modified":"2021-12-13T11:47:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T11:47:58","slug":"crypto-in-the-spotlight-as-two-australian-exchanges-collapse-with-50-million-lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-in-the-spotlight-as-two-australian-exchanges-collapse-with-50-million-lost\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto in the spotlight as two Australian exchanges collapse with $50 million lost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/dec\/12\/the-search-is-on-for-50m-in-lost-cryptocurrency-after-two-australian-exchanges-collapse\">Legal experts<\/a> sound the alarm following Blockchain Global (BG), the parent company of crypto exchange ACX, going into voluntary administration in September.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Mycryptowallet collapsed last week, prompting renewed calls for tighter regulation on the crypto sector as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Guardian, $50 million in cryptocurrency is lost between the two incidents, with ACX accounting for the vast majority of the missing funds.<\/p>\n<h2>Australian crypto firms take a bashing<\/h2>\n<p>On September 13, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/financial-services\/court-freezes-8-75m-in-crypto-collapse-case-20211007-p58y53\">Victoria Supreme Court<\/a> ordered the freeze of 117 Bitcoin held by\u00a0 BG and ACX following a dispute between former business partners Sam Lee, Allan Guo, and Jin Chen.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne-based ACX shut down its operations in early 2020, freezing user accounts in the process. Around 200 investors came forward, claiming a total loss of $7 million (AUS$10 million).<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain Australia imposed a lifetime ban in response, while financial regulators AUSTRAC revoked the platform's digital currency registration.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the forensic accountants have examined the firm's financial records to discover a black hole closer to $50 million, rather than the $7 million initially thought.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/dec\/12\/the-search-is-on-for-50m-in-lost-cryptocurrency-after-two-australian-exchanges-collapse\">Andrew Yeo<\/a>, partner at financial services practice Pitcher Partners said he doesn't know what happened to money belonging to hundreds of ACX customers. But he's determined to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago, Pitcher Partners were appointed to oversee the administration of BG; however, Yeo admits he isn't a crypto specialist.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"dcr-amp-ptjxu2\">&#8220;It\u2019s clear that there\u2019s a number of channels of investigation which we may have available and determining which ones are best to follow first is not a simple task<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Likewise, last week, crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/alexandria\/article\/mycryptowallet-exchange-collapses-users-may-lose-funds\">Mycryptowallet<\/a> collapsed with hundreds of thousands thought owing.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Australian news outlets said users had complained about being unable to withdraw funds and missing balances. Mycryptowallet called the concerns a &#8220;negative shill campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But now, as liquidation proceedings begin, insolvency firm SV Partners has called on all affected users to come forward.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto comes under fire<\/h2>\n<p>The fallout from both collapses has prompted lawmakers to speak out against the crypto sector, especially concerning the lack of guarantees and investor protections in place when dealing with digital currency.<\/p>\n<p>Advisor and Researcher at RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-07\/mycryptowallet-collapse-liquidation-jaryd-koenigsmann\/100679200\">Aaron Lane<\/a> said funds held on exchanges present significant third-party risk.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think that's one of the things that a lot of consumers don't understand, that the cryptocurrency held on the exchange is not theirs in the same way. They don't have direct control over it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What's more, as the crypto space is not regulated to the same extent as the banking sector, users are left in the dark regarding which exchanges are trustworthy and have protections in place to safeguard user funds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/dec\/12\/the-search-is-on-for-50m-in-lost-cryptocurrency-after-two-australian-exchanges-collapse\"><span class=\"dcr-amp-ptjxu2\">Josh Frydenberg<\/span><\/a>, the Australian Treasurer, said the government is in the process of establishing a crypto exchange licensing system.
