{"id":207430,"date":"2021-12-10T01:30:37","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T01:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=207430"},"modified":"2021-12-09T17:22:38","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T17:22:38","slug":"former-us-official-criticizes-sec-crypto-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/former-us-official-criticizes-sec-crypto-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Former U.S. official criticizes SEC crypto regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">In their bid to better understand the crypto industry and its operations, US lawmakers invited the chief executive officers (CEO) of some leading crypto exchanges to a major hearing tagged \u201cDigital Assets and the Future of Finance: Understanding Innovation in the United State.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Brian Brooks criticizes SEC<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One of the invited executives was the pro-crypto former head of the United States Office of the Comptroller of Currency who is now the CEO of a leading crypto exchange, BitFury, Brian Brooks, who seized the opportunity to criticize the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulatory efforts of the industry.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to the former top government official, the SEC, through its regulatory actions, has been pushing some crypto-related firms outside the shores of the United States. Brooks cited the example of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/fidelity-investments\/\">Fidelity<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/not-waiting-around-for-the-sec-fidelity-will-launch-a-spot-bitcoin-etf-in-canada\/\">recently moved its Bitcoin ETF product to Canada<\/a> because the Gary Gensler-led commission refused to approve its application in the United States.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You\u2019ll recall that the US SEC has been reluctant in approving a Bitcoin Spot ETF because it believes it exposes investors to the volatile nature of the digital asset. However, players in the space have severally criticized this decision by the regulator saying its preference for a futures-backed ETF and refusal to approve a spot ETF could even be a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/grayscale-writes-a-letter-to-the-sec-accuses-the-regulator-of-violating-the-law\/\">violation of US laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>On the growth of Stablecoins<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The former <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/binance-us\/\">Binance.US<\/a> CEO also questioned why only banks would be allowed to issue stablecoins when the regulators refused to grant bank charters to major stablecoin issuers like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">Tether<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USD Coin<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On the other hand, the CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/paxos-standard-token\/\">Paxos<\/a>, Charles Cascarilla, pointed out that the US has to step up its activities in the Stablecoin industry if it does not want the US Dollars to lose its status as the reserve currency of the world. According to Cascarilla, if a US CBDC project is not kickstarted or the US Dollar-backed stablecoin space is not regulated, it could have a ripple effect on the crypto industry generally.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Recently, the authorities released a <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/136\/StableCoinReport_Nov1_508.pdf\">Stablecoin report<\/a> where they stated that only insured depository institutions should be allowed to issue stablecoin.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Within the last one year, the Stablecoin industry has seen tremendous growth as the market cap of the space has grown to over $150 billion.
