{"id":206844,"date":"2021-12-04T01:19:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T01:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=206844"},"modified":"2021-12-04T01:19:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-04T01:19:39","slug":"polkadot-founder-gavin-wood-thought-about-calling-web3-post-snowden-web","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/polkadot-founder-gavin-wood-thought-about-calling-web3-post-snowden-web\/","title":{"rendered":"Polkadot founder Gavin Wood thought about calling \u2018Web3\u2019\u2013\u2018Post-Snowden Web\u2019\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a historic discussion on the evolution of the decentralized internet at the BlockDown: DeData Conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/polkadot\/\">Polkadot<\/a> founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/polkadot-founder-gavin-wood-decentralization-shouldnt-cut-corners-in-favor-of-scalability\/\">Gavin Wood<\/a>, who himself coined the term \u2018Web3,\u2019 said that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/edward-snowden-set-to-discuss-his-use-of-bitcoin-in-the-nsa-leaks-at-blockdown-conference\/\">Edward Snowden<\/a>\u2019s revelations helped bring to light the urgency for creating a whole new platform that would \u201ceclipse\u201d the traditional authority based technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging that the 2013 revelations prompted the \u201cneed for the society to move away from these fundamental issues of trust,\u201d Wood added he considered terming this completely different approach to inter-human interaction on a global level\u2013\u201cPost-Snowden Web.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Service providers won\u2019t need to be trusted<\/h2>\n<p>Looking 10 or 20 years ahead, Wood hopes the future &#8220;massively multi-user application framework&#8221;\u2013global services that we broadly refer to as \u2018Web\u2019\u2013will provide us with \u2018de facto\u2019 guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard guarantees on the rules that are open and transparent\u2013that we can read, whether it\u2019s in code, whether it\u2019s in English\u2013and a credible belief that they will be followed,\u201d is according to Wood, what was missing in the \u201cpre-blockchain, pre-peer-to-peer world,\u201d which was centered around a trusted authority providing a service.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be a very interesting social experiment, &#8221; Wood answered when he was asked to predict what Web3 is going to look like in a decade from now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna see just how much the world cares about privacy, self-sovereignty and transparency, knowing that the rules\u2013the assumptions about how a system or service works\u2013are true.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Be aware of predatory practices<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe had this beautiful thing\u2013in the internet\u2013that was given to us,\u201d said Snowden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is a countervailing force that has taken the internet to exploit it\u2013they have accepted it as a gift to themselves\u2013to the exclusion of everyone else,\u201d he added, talking about powerful central forces, whether governmental or corporate.<\/p>\n<p>He observes the same pattern is \u201dbeginning to distort the blockchain space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a lot of projects that are being sort of manipulated, or contorted, or shaped, or reshaped\u2013to be, as politely as possible, much fairer to the investors of the project, than they are to the public in general,\u201d added Snowden, calling it\u2013\u201cthe corruption of the ideals of the space and what it could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOver time and with iterations, the common interest will win over selfish interest,\u201d he concluded optimistically.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As he cautioned about pitfalls surrounding the issuance of CBDCs, which he <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/could-the-proposed-us-digital-dollar-be-self-annihilating-edward-snowden-seems-to-say-so\/\">addresses<\/a> in detail on his Substack, Snowden also <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/worldcoin-wants-to-scan-your-eyeballs-but-its-founder-says-thats-the-future-of-privacy\/\">warned<\/a> about possible future implications of projects creating personal identifier databases\u2013referencing Worldcoin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe aware of predatory practices,\u201d cautioned the famous privacy advocate, saying he is mostly concerned about \u201cthe first-mover advantage\u2013the network effect\u2013by the market leaders and those who have a lot of resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By voicing his reservations about NFTs in the GameFi sector, he criticized the trend for \u200b\u200b\u201cinjecting an artificial sense of scarcity into a post-scarcity domain.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI see them creeping into gaming in a way a lot of people are excited about,\u201d said Snowden, adding that, as someone who has been playing games for a long time, he perceives this as \u201can inherently anti-social urge.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a historic discussion on the evolution of the decentralized internet at the BlockDown: DeData Conference, Polkadot founder Gavin Wood, who himself coined the term \u2018Web3,\u2019 said that Edward Snowden\u2019s revelations helped bring to light the urgency for creating a whole new platform that would \u201ceclipse\u201d the traditional authority based technologies.
