{"id":202254,"date":"2021-10-25T08:00:28","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T07:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=202254"},"modified":"2021-10-25T09:20:16","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T08:20:16","slug":"stablecoin-crypto-diem-shuns-its-facebook-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/stablecoin-crypto-diem-shuns-its-facebook-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"Stablecoin crypto Diem shuns its Facebook connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diem, a Facebook-backed crypto project, has responded to attempts by the United States Senate to shut the launch of its Novi wallet by distancing itself from the social media giant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crypto project, yesterday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scontent.ftpa1-1.fna.fbcdn.net\/v\/t39.2365-6\/243566529_1907629929421423_7584572429964174603_n.pdf?_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=ad8a9d&_nc_ohc=RxaLSyJxi90AX--MPX4&_nc_ht=scontent.ftpa1-1.fna&oh=478518419c480923af401eb4556dd5e5&oe=617338BB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Novi wallet which would \u201chelp people send and receive money abroad instantly, securely, and with no fees.\u201d However, this was met with stiff opposition from the US lawmakers who wrote an open letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereums-vitalik-buterin-isnt-sold-on-dorseys-bitcoin-plans\/\">Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> to discontinue the digital wallet project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schatz.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/schatz_et_al_letter_to_facebook_on_diem.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signed by members of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, they revealed that this is their \u201cstrongest opposition to Facebook\u2019s revived effort to launch a cryptocurrency and digital wallet,\u201d while urging <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/parabolic-bitcoin-market-cap-sees-btc-briefly-top-facebook-valuation\/\">Facebook<\/a> \u201cto immediately discontinue \u00a0Novi pilot and to commit that you will not bring Diem to market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the Novi wallet launch continued despite the hostilities from the senate as it is currently listed on Apple and Google\u2019s app stores for download.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Diem says it is not Facebook<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diem in its response to the letter by the Senators stated that the legislators might have misunderstood \u201cthe relationship between Diem and Facebook.\u201d While also revealing that the social media entity and the crypto project were two entirely different organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diem.com\/en-us\/updates\/diem_congressional_interest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cDiem is not Facebook. We are an independent organization, and Facebook\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/facebooks-mark-zuckerberg-explains-how-digital-currency-libra-could-increase-the-firms-profits\/\">Novi<\/a> is just one of more than two dozen members of the Diem Association. Novi\u2019s pilot with Paxos is unrelated to Diem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The press release continued that \u201cDiem\u2019s blockchain-based payment system has been purpose-built for payments, and that is why we have prioritized consumer safety, financial stability, and combating financial crime. Furthermore, our independence is designed to foster competition and interoperability in payments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all of this might sound like the right words, Diem is still linked to Facebook in more ways than one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the Diem Stablecoin project is being led by one of Facebook\u2019s top executives in the person of David Marcus who is the social media giant\u2019s Financial head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from this, the project is a brainchild of Facebook as it was developed internally in 2018 before it was shelved.
