{"id":199614,"date":"2021-09-22T09:50:06","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T08:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=199614"},"modified":"2021-09-25T02:19:50","modified_gmt":"2021-09-25T01:19:50","slug":"sec-chair-gary-gensler-says-stablecoins-are-like-casino-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-chair-gary-gensler-says-stablecoins-are-like-casino-chips\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC chair Gary Gensler says stablecoins are like &#8216;casino chips&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">In his latest remarks about cryptocurrencies, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission chair, Gary Gensler, has compared stablecoins to instruments for gambling at old-timey casinos.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Stablecoins like poker chips<\/h2>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">This came on Tuesday while Gensler spoke with David Ignatius, a columnist with Washington Post; he <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-chair-wants-robust-crypto-regulatory-regime-for-the-us%20\/o%20https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-chair-wants-robust-crypto-regulatory-regime-for-the-us\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">said<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> several cryptocurrency projects fall under securities that SEC oversees, while the rest are better suited for the enforcement Commodity Futures Trading Commission.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">He described the authority of both agencies as robust but noted that their coverage is inadequate, especially for stablecoins which could have the traits of investment contracts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">\u201cStablecoins are almost acting like poker chips at the casino right now.\u201d He added that \u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of casinos here in the Wild West, and the poker chip is these stablecoins at the casino gaming tables.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>SEC and CFTC on Crypto<\/h2>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">According to Gensler, both SEC and CFTC would benefit from the congress in terms of regulation and enforcement for stablecoins. However, the current laws are seemingly broad to handle a modern financial instrument like crypto.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">He stated that \u201cI do really fear that we\u2019ll keep bringing these enforcement cases, but there\u2019s going to be a problem. There\u2019s going to be a problem on lending platforms, on trading platforms. Frankly, when that happens, I think a lot of people are going to get hurt.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Recall that Gensler had hoped to\u00a0introduce crypto-related policy changes\u00a0that would cover token offerings, decentralized finance, stablecoins, custody, exchange-traded funds, and lending platforms back in August. For a long time, it has urged crypto projects to register with the SEC, to survive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SEC boss assured that his team and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission are working tirelessly to protect investors.
