{"id":199087,"date":"2021-09-16T17:00:24","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T16:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=199087"},"modified":"2021-09-16T17:38:34","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T16:38:34","slug":"heres-why-ethereum-defi-app-arbitrum-went-offline-yesterday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/heres-why-ethereum-defi-app-arbitrum-went-offline-yesterday\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s why Ethereum DeFi app Arbitrum went offline yesterday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arbitrum suffered downtime on September 14 as the network\u2019s sequencer went offline for roughly 45 minutes, disclosed Offchain Labs, the company that is developing the optimistic rollup, in an official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/offchainlabs\/arbitrum-one-outage-report-d365b24d49c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Medium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The young Layer-2 rollup belongs to the flock of scaling solutions that sit on top of the Ethereum (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ETH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) network, enabling cheaper and faster transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sequencer outage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArbitrum One is still in its beta phase, and we will do our best to minimize downtime. But, as we noted in our launch announcement, we do want to caution users that further outages are possible in these early days,\u201d said Offchain Labs in an official outage report, while underlining that the funds were never at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Please see below for more information on today&#39;s Sequencer downtime.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/85inudbSGk\">https:\/\/t.co\/85inudbSGk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Arbitrum is live on mainnet! (@arbitrum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arbitrum\/status\/1437855924249575424?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, the downtime was ascribed to \u201ca bug causing the sequencer to get stuck\u201d after a huge batch of transactions were submitted over a short period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed,\u201d reassured the company and continued to point out the difference between a sequencer outage and a network outage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Sequencer never has the ability to steal funds or forge transactions, because every transaction it handles is digitally signed by a user and the signatures are checked by the Arbitrum chain,\u201d read the report, in which the developers reminded that the Arbitrum bridge continued to operate during the outage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the downtime, the submission of new transactions was halted, although, as explained in the report, users were still able to bypass the sequencer and submit their transactions directly to Ethereum for delayed inclusion in the Arbitrum chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ethereum evades the attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arbitrum wasn\u2019t the only network that suffered downtime yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another blockchain platform, Solana (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/solana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SOL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), also stopped processing transactions as the network experienced intermittent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/solana-transactions-stop-as-mainnet-experiences-intermittent-instability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ Solana Mainnet Beta encountered a large increase in transaction load which peaked at 400,000 TPS. These transactions flooded the transaction processing queue, and lack of prioritization of network-critical messaging caused the network to start forking.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Solana Status (@SolanaStatus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SolanaStatus\/status\/1437856638279487493?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the Ethereum blockchain itself evaded a malicious attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomeone unsuccessfully tried to attack #ethereum today by publishing a long (~550) blocks which contained invalid pow's,\u201d according to Marius Van Der Wijden, a developer on Ethereum, who flagged the incident on Twitter yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Someone unsuccessfully tried to attack <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ethereum?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ethereum<\/a> today by publishing a long (~550) blocks which contained invalid pow&#39;s. Only a small percentage of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nethermindeth?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nethermindeth<\/a> nodes switched to this invalid chain.
