{"id":198117,"date":"2021-09-02T05:00:47","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T04:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=198117"},"modified":"2024-03-01T16:29:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T16:29:49","slug":"crypto-loving-nigeria-begins-enaira-cbdc-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-loving-nigeria-begins-enaira-cbdc-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto-loving Nigeria begins eNaira CBDC project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-peer-to-peer-volumes-in-nigeria-continue-surging\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigeria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has upped the ante on its quest for a national digital currency as the Central bank of the African country has revealed that it will be partnering with Bitt Inc as a technical partner for the actualization of the \u201ceNaira\u201d project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the press statement released by the apex bank, the CBDC project is set to commence at a later period this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>eNaira will be a legal tender<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement revealed that the e-currency project tagged \u201cProject Giant\u201d would be used by the country for \u201ccross-border trade, accelerated financial inclusion, cheaper and faster remittance inflow and easier targeted social interventions.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only that, the bank\u2019s statement also highlighted that the bank plans to use the project to \u201cimprove its monetary policy effectiveness\u201d whilst also helping to improve its \u201cpayment systems\u201d and also for \u201ctax collection\u201d purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nairametrics.com\/2021\/08\/29\/cbn-drafts-guidelines-to-nigerian-banks-on-e-naira\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local news site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Central bank has already sent a presentation about the design and operations of the eNaira to banks in the country. Per the report, the digital money would be recognized as a legal tender across the country while adding that \u201cit will have non-interest-bearing CBDC status, a transaction limit for customers, and a value-based transaction limit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigeria\u2019s current attempt at digitizing its fiat currency is in line with global best practices. Already, \u201cover 85 percent of Central banks are now considering adopting digital currencies in their country.\u201d Notable examples of countries that have made advances in their CBDC project include China, Japan, Russia. Another African country making the leap is Ghana and a host of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will recall that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nigerian-central-bank-does-a-u-turn-on-bitcoin-ban-saying-they-now-allow-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central bank of Nigeria had earlier restricted banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under its jurisdiction from providing their services for crypto-related transactions.
