And here's how it adds value to the Ethereum network.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>DeFi traders\u2019 arbitrage of MEV affects Ethereum transactions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Miner extractable value measures the profit a miner could make through their managing of transactions in the blocks they create. The \u201cconventional\u201d source of profit would be transaction fees and block rewards from the consensus system.<\/p>\n<p>However, Flashbots <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/flashbots\/frontrunning-the-mev-crisis-40629a613752\">points<\/a> to \u201c\u2018unconventional\u2019 profits from transaction reordering, transaction insertion, and transaction censorship within the block a miner is producing\u201d as the negative aspect of MEV.<\/p>\n<p>According to the organization, \u201cthe MEV present on Ethereum today is predominantly captured by DeFi traders through structural arbitrage trading strategies\u201d as opposed to miners.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy used by DeFi traders to arbitrage MEV is &#8220;front-running.&#8221; Traders pay a slightly higher gas fee than another transaction to get their transaction included in a block prior to the original transaction.<\/p>\n<p>This works because miners would want to accept the transactions with the highest gas fee first. In practice, according to Flashbots, this strategy could be used to \u201csnatch a Uniswap price arbitrage trade to rebalance a pool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This strategy leads to \u201cnegative externalities such as network congestion (i.e. P2P network load) and chain congestion (i.e. blockspace usage)\u201d as transactions are added to blocks for arbitrage purposes while other transactions are slowed. Flashbots also brings up the point that the strategy could compromise Ethereum\u2019s consensus system. This is due to <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1904.05234.pdf\">time-bandit attacks<\/a> and \u201cpermissioned communication infrastructure between traders and miners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Flashbots has 3 strategies to mitigate the MEV extraction issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Flashbots describes their plan to fight the MEV crisis in three parts: \u201c<em>Illuminate the Dark Forest, Democratize Extraction, and Distribute Benefits<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first is focused on the issue that MEV is currently hidden from most Ethereum users. Flashbots hopes to add transparency to MEV as the organization has built MEV-Inspect which \u201cscans Ethereum blocks and enables visualization of MEV metrics over time\u201d. The second step is focused on the issue that MEV extraction is likely going to be centralized with \u201cpermissioned dark transaction pools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Flashbots has built MEV-Geth as \u201can upgrade to the go-ethereum client to enable a sealed-bid block space auction mechanism for communicating transaction order preference\u201d. The goal is to create a better communication channel for miners and traders to bid on the inclusion of their transactions.<\/p>\n<p>For the third part, Flashbots focuses on the issue that MEV extraction only benefits miners and traders. As a result, Flashbots is focused on \u201caligning incentives around MEV for all system participants\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Flashbots is a crucial organization to make sure that Ethereum stays true to its original promises of \u201copenness, permisionlessness, decentralization\u201d.
