{"id":192469,"date":"2021-06-09T10:29:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T09:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=192469"},"modified":"2022-07-26T03:17:51","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T02:17:51","slug":"el-savadors-relationship-with-the-imf-turns-complicated-after-new-bitcoin-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/el-savadors-relationship-with-the-imf-turns-complicated-after-new-bitcoin-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"El Salvador\u2019s relationship with the IMF turns complicated after new Bitcoin bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Monetary Fund (IMF), a global intergovernmental organization that supports economic structures and finance in the world, is set to hold talks with El Salvador after it passed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-is-now-legal-tender-in-el-salvador\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin bill today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The issue with accepting Bitcoin<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/el-salvador-presidents-bitcoin-push-casts-shadow-over-imf-efforts-2021-06-07\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, El Salvador is already nursing a strained relationship with the IMF amidst difficult economic conditions and monetary concerns\u2014making its new policy a complicated affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This may just reflect a long-term initiative or maybe even just a flashy PR tactic; however it shows lack of coordination with impulsive announcements that contradict a cohesive economic plan,&#8221; shared Siobhan Morden, head of Latin America fixed-income strategy at Amherst Pierpoint Securities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others like Carlos de Sousa, a portfolio manager at Vontobel Asset Management, said the move to adopt Bitcoin made the current tax avoidance situation even more tricky to encounter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Cryptocurrencies are overall a very easy way to avoid taxation and a very easy way to simply avoid the authorities because it's a completely decentralized system,\u201d De Sousa said, adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cYou can do money laundering, you can do tax avoidance and so on.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Adoption: Not a meme anymore<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Nayib Bukele said the bill to accept Bitcoin as \u2018legal tender\u2019 was passed in Congress this morning, adding that the asset could be used to make any payments within the country, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debt could be paid back with Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BitcoinLaw?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BitcoinLaw<\/a> has been approved by a supermajority in the Salvadoran Congress.<\/p>\n<p>62 out of 84 votes!<\/p>\n<p>History! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Btc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Btc<\/a>??<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nayib Bukele ??
