Atlas Power mines cryptocurrency and is set on expanding its Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all the special use permits are obtained, Atlas Power would buy the Basin Creek Solar Project and use the solar array to power its mining operations, for which it has a 75-megawatt permit from the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the fourth quarter of 2020, Montana had only 116 megawatts of solar capacity installed, ranking it 43rd in the US, according to The Solar Energy Industries Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/state-solar-policy\/montana-solar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Crypto mining requires huge amounts of energy consumption and many companies are looking for a way to make the process greener. A Montana crypto-miner is seeking approval for a $300 million solar power plant which would double the states solar capacity.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/teOZixc0rC\">https:\/\/t.co\/teOZixc0rC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Artisan Electric Inc (@ArtisanElectInc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArtisanElectInc\/status\/1398309354928066561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt Vincent, a spokesperson for the solar project, said that the Atlas Power operation has been reducing their expenditure with efficiency changes, scaling their rates from a previous high of 65 down to 25 megawatts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas power is planning an expansion of its GPUs by adding 8 new buildings in the short term. Thousands of additional GPUs are going to facilitate the data center's diversification beyond crypto to a broad scope of cutting-edge tech work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criticism and disbelief\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end goal of the project is to power the mining facility completely with solar array energy and put the remaining power on the grid. Developers said the solar farm would have the capacity to power around 40.000 homes, which greatly surpasses Butte's size of roughly 15.000 households, as mentioned in the local news report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butte residents are worried about the project\u2019s impact on their community.
