{"id":189657,"date":"2021-05-08T05:00:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T04:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=189657"},"modified":"2021-05-08T11:37:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T10:37:33","slug":"nuvei-to-acquire-crypto-payments-processor-simplex-for-250-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nuvei-to-acquire-crypto-payments-processor-simplex-for-250-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuvei to acquire crypto payments processor Simplex for $250 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian publicly listed payment technology company Nuvei has announced its plans to buy crypto payments processor Simplex, which recently became a member of the Visa network, for $250 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe expect Simplex to enhance and expand Nuvei\u2019s steadily growing portfolio of alternative payment methods, adding turnkey simplicity to the process of buying and selling cryptocurrency and converting it back to fiat within a user account\u2014ultimately reducing complexity for merchants and consumers,\u201d said Nuvei\u2019s chairman and CEO Philip Fayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.nuvei.com\/English\/news\/news-details\/2021\/Nuvei-to-Acquire-Simplex-a-Payment-Solution-Provider-to-the-Cryptocurrency-Industry\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published yesterday, the deal is expected to be finalized \u201cin the second half of 2021.\u201d The acquisition will be \u201csubject to customary closing conditions,\u201d including approval from regulators, the companies noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, since Simplex is officially licensed in the EU, the acquisition will grant Nuvei a similar \u201celectronic money institution\u201d license. This would allow the company to offer banking IBAN accounts and card issuing services to its clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bridging crypto to traditional finance<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2004, Israeli-based Simplex is a so-called crypto on-\/off-ramp payments processor that allows users to turn their fiat currencies into crypto and vice versa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last December, Simplex became a principal member of the Visa network, which allowed it to issue the corresponding debit and credit cards. Thanks to this, SImplex customers can pay with digital assets at any merchant that supports Visa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, Binance, the world\u2019s largest crypto exchange by trading volumes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-enables-credit-card-payments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">integrated Simplex\u2019s solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January 2019, allowing its users to buy digital assets via credit cards for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As such, Nuvei connects merchants in 200 markets across the world and supports 470 payment methods, including 150 fiat currencies, and 40 cryptos.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy joining Nuvei, Simplex will be able to fulfill its promise of bridging the gap between the blockchain space and the traditional finance world.
